Change4Life resource pack for early years settings

Healthy Schools Resource Pack

January 2019

Are you Sugar Smart at your setting?

Children are having nearly three times the maximum recommended amount of sugar they should have leading to tooth decay, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

This newsletter will provide settings with ideas, resources and links to campaign resources from Change4Life, SUGAR SMART and Fizz Free February, to promote healthier lifestyle choices. A whole setting approach has been shown to be the most effective method to change not just knowledge but also attitudes and behaviour of children.

Teaching and Learning

Research evidence shows that education and health are closely linked. So promoting the health and wellbeing of children within early years settings has the potential to improve both their educational and their health and wellbeing outcomes. Children with better health and wellbeing are likely to learn better.

Islington's cooking skills and nutrition resource: Cooking Matters Toolkit

Teaching children about cooking and nutrition can make a real difference to the quality of their lives; it equips them with the confidence to make healthy food choices and supports a healthy enjoyment of food. Learning to cook from an early age can contribute to maintaining a healthy weight, good oral health and general health and wellbeing.

Fizz Free February

Fizz Free February

This campaign aims to reduce the consumption of fizzy and soft drinks. The calories in sugary and fizzy drinks are often consumed as extra calories and thereby increasing the risk of obesity. Sugary and fizzy drinks are also bad for teeth because of the amount of sugar as well as the acidity especially in fizzy drinks.

Get your parents to make a pledge to drink less or go fizz free this February.

Policy and guidance

It has been found that the culture, ethos and environment of a setting influences the health and wellbeing of children and their readiness to learn. Early years settings are in an ideal position to change pupils’ attitudes and health behaviours by using a whole setting approach to healthy eating, physical activity and creating a health promoting environment.

Join SUGAR SMART Islington

SUGAR SMART Islington is working with schools and children's centres and other organisations across the borough to promote healthier, lower-alternatives and to limit less healthy choices.
