Level 2 heatwave warning issued
With prolonged periods of warm weather expected over the next few days, a ‘heat health’ warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight.
There is a 60% chance of heatwave conditions between 0000 Friday 17 June and 0000 Sunday 19 June in the South East of England.
Hot weather can affect everyone, especially the very young or very old or those with chronic disease.
The top ways for staying safe when the heat arrives are to:
- look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions
- close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
- turn off lights or electrical items that are not in use to keep rooms as cool as possible;
- drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
- never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals;
- try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm
- take care and follow local safety advice, if you are going into the water to cool down
- walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat, if you have to go out in the heat
- avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
- wear light, loose fitting cotton clothes
- make sure you take water with you, if you are travelling
Look after yourself at the Isle of Wight Festival
Are you looking forward to an amazing weekend? Don’t let illness ruin your fun.
- Simple actions like getting rid of used tissues safely and washing your hands with soap and water can help stop you catching and spreading illnesses like Norovirus, flu, and COVID-19.
- Some bugs like COVID-19, measles and meningitis can be prevented with vaccines, so make sure you are up to date with your vaccinations.
- If you’re feeling poorly try to stay at home to take care of yourself and protect others.
- Contact NHS 111 if you’re concerned and need further health advice.
- It’s also important to look after your sexual health. Using a condom every time you have sex is the best way to protect yourself and partner from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and pregnancy.
Isle of Wight Festival updates
The Isle of Wight Festival is this weekend; 16 to 19 June.
There are changes to how traffic around the festival site at Newport is managed and to how some of our services are provided.
The one-way system along Fairlee Road, Newport will be put in place from lunchtime on Wednesday 15 June. All outbound traffic from Newport will be directed up Staplers Road.
Please try to reduce car trips around Newport Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning to help stop pressure on traffic movement in and around the town. when the one way system comes in.
