The Colours of Music Orchestra
City Arts Unit (as part of Creative Voice and Music 4U opportunities) have co-ordinated with Spin Off Productions the second concert by The Colours of Music Orchestra at 11am on Friday 12 July, Albemarle Centre. The performance is of a tale from Indonesia called Too-Too-Moo and the Giant.
The Colours of Music Orchestra - a collaborative ensemble of young people from Ganton, Tweendykes, Northcott and Frederick Homes schools - have been working this Summer Term to present the Indonesian folk-tale of Too-Too-Moo and the Giant. The production will involve theatre, shadow puppetry, percussion and traditional Javanese gamelan ensembles. Young people from four Hull schools will work with composer and gamelan expert Emily Crossland, percussionist and performer Gary Hammond, and designer and puppeteer Liz Dees to achieve a fully collaborative, original interpretation of this traditional tale. Young people will also have the opportunity to explore musical composition as they develop their own soundtrack for the story.
Creative Voice Youth Arts Festival
Creative Voice Youth Arts Festival is in its planning stages and will take place during October half term, 31 Ocotober - 2 November at Hull Truck Theatre and Humber Street. Hull Truck Theatre presents Sign of the Times by Tim Firth Directed by Nick Lane
Thursday 27 June – Saturday 20 July
This summer the writing’s on the wall in a heart-warming play about having pride in your work and faith in your dreams, from the writer of Calendar Girls and The Flint Street Nativity.
By day, Frank puts signs on the sides of buildings. By night he is a writer of great, thrilling – though unpublished – spy novels. When a work experience scheme lands him with unenthused teenager Alan, Frank’s fascinating knowledge seems to fall on deaf ears. In a world where jobs are scarce, dignity is difficult and they’re carting away the vending machines with the Twixes still in them, is that flickering ‘For Sale’ just a sign of the times?
Tickets for Sign of the Times are priced at £12-£18.50 (concs available) and can be purchased at the Box Office on 01482 323638 or online at the theatre website

Slip Between The Covers Of A New Collection
Day and Night in the Damaged Goods Factory is the new collection of poetry from Hull writer Mike Watts. Available now from Amazon, Burning Eye books and Waterstones Hull.
Raw and heartfelt, this uncompromising poetry is about fighting your corner, counting down the hours and dreaming of making it to the end of the week. Cynical, yet celebratory, Day and Night in the Damaged Goods Factory is about surviving and savouring each moment.
'...the poems have a kind of exuberance to them, and energy that's almost infectious.' Helen Mort
'Crashes through life in quick-fire stanzas that whack the unsuspecting reader over the head.' Michelle Dee
'Mike Watts strips everyday life back to its bare essentials and reveals the heart breaking beauty beneath. Hold this collection close': Russ Litten
Mike Watts' first anthology, Coming to a Street Near You was published by Night Publishing in 2010. He has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, Latitude Festival, Battersea Arts Centre, local BBC Radio, pubs, theatres and most recently behind bars whilst also delivering poetry workshops inside local prisons.
Day and Night in the Damaged Goods Factory by Mike Watts is published in paperback by Burning Eye Books.
