This autumn sees Ten Drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci From the Royal
Collection, A Diamond Jubilee Celebration come to Ferens Art Gallery in November
as well as the opportunity to see John Smith's film 'The Black Tower'.
The Ferens will host an exhibition by one of the most influential and famous artists to emerge in post-war America. A broad range of Andy Warhol's work from the ARTIST ROOMS collection will be included, from rarely-seen stitched photographs to his iconic posters and late paintings.
The unique stitched photographs produced between 1976 and 1986 mark a return to Warhol's interest in multiple images. He put together groups of four, six or twelve prints of the same image and had them sewn together to form one complete work of art. The thread is left to hang as he did not want to disguise how the work had been made. Warhol's intention was often to emphasise the significance of something unusual.
The posters on display, which span the 60s, 70s, and 80s, illustrate strong themes within Warhol's art. He was keenly aware of the power of branding, advertising and marketing. In his posters he celebrates the modern commercial world that had provided prosperity for post-war America.
ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is an inspired partnership with the Art Fund - the fundraising charity for works of art, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK. ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d'Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments.

Ten Drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci From the Royal Collection, A Diamond Jubilee Celebration
10 November 2012 – 20 January 2013
The Ferens Art Gallery is the only Yorkshire venue to host this exciting exhibition, which includes some of Leonardo da Vinci’s finest drawings. The ten drawings reflect the artist's use of different media and his extraordinary range of interests from painting and sculpture to engineering, botany, mapmaking, hydraulics, and anatomy. The exhibition includes designs for chariots fitted with flailing clubs, a study of the head of Leda, a drawing of oak leaves, a double-sided sheet of anatomical sketches, a design for a scheme to drain marshland, a view of a river from a window, a costume study of a man on horseback, apocalyptic scenes, and a rough study of an old man in profile, which is one of the last drawings made by the artist. Before the exhibition arrives at the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, it will have been seen in Birmingham, Bristol, Belfast and Dundee.
