What is art therapy?

In the midst of a welcome focus on wellbeing and mental health, there increasing evidence about the importance of creativity to help us be and stay well. Health services and others are commissioning arts on prescription, social prescribing, arts and health, and other creative health initiatives. Sometimes art therapy is also mentioned in the mix. Things can get confusing, so it’s worth clarifying some important distinctions between creative health approaches and art therapy.

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy – a clinical treatment process, using visual arts to explore and understand unconscious processes influencing patients’ lives and mental health or illness. Art therapy can only be undertaken by art therapists who have completed an MA or MSc training validated by the Health and Care Profession’s Council (HCPC), and who are subsequently registered with the HCPC - the professional body for art therapists and other ‘allied health professionals’ like psychologists, radiographers, physiotherapists etc. Music therapy, dance movement therapy and dramatherapy are similarly regulated and require HCPC registration.

Art therapy / art psychotherapy can only be undertaken by art therapists - this is a ‘protected title’, meaning that only those with this validated qualification and HCPC registration are entitled to identify as such. Anyone using this title improperly can be taken to court.

The bottom line is that unless you have completed a valid art therapy MA or MSc. qualification, are registered with the HCPC, keep up to date with your professionally-required CPD, and have regular professionally-recommended clinical supervision, you cannot legally practise as an art therapist / art psychotherapist or describe your work as art therapy.

Arts and health, creative health, arts for wellbeing, arts on prescription and other similar approaches are completely different. They are based on the premise that being creative (often working with professional artists) and having creative experiences are fundamentally healthy, health-promoting and life-affirming things to do. Many arts and health initiatives are targeted at particular groups – e.g. young people leaving the care system, elderly people with dementia etc and, if delivering this work, creative professionals need to understand something of the issues for these groups, and develop their creative activities accordingly. However, they are not exploring issues, delving into unconscious processes or offering treatment or therapy. Instead, activities and programmes are based instead on the significant affirming, boosting, catalysing and transformative experiences that creative expression, development and engagement can bring.

It’s important to be very clear about the distinctions between therapy and creative engagement. The starting points and contracts are very different – the processes are totally distinct. Arts organisations and individual practitioners need to be careful about representing what they offer accurately, and not blurring the lines between art therapy and creative activities that support wellbeing.

Larkin 100

There is only one place for a Larkin lover to be on the Tuesday 9 August or indeed on the many days and months that follow, and that is the city of Hull.

Fittingly, the city where Larkin spent thirty years of his life takes centre stage as he turns 100. They will use his birthday to formally launch a series of exciting and innovative centenary events, now confidently extending to the end of the year thanks to vital support from our key partners: Hull City Council, Hull History Centre and the University of Hull. The day kicks off with an incredible afternoon of poetry, dance and music entitled ‘Finding Home’ at Hull Truck Theatre — it will feature Imtiaz Dharker, Matthew Sweet, Vicky Foster, The Broken Orchestra, Wes Finch and the JoinedUp Dance Company. It promises to be an afternoon to savour. A celebration of a city to which Larkin, like so many before and after him, came for a year or two and stayed for a lifetime: a place which he sometimes called ‘home’ and which made, and continues to make, astonishing poetry possible.

This major new touring exhibition challenges the male-dominated narratives of post-war British sculpture by presenting a diverse and significant range of ambitious work by women. Breaking the Mould is the first survey of post-war British sculpture by women. This exhibition provides a radical recalibration, addressing the many accounts of British sculpture that have marginalised women or airbrushed their work from art history altogether. The exhibition surveys seventy-five years and explores the work of over forty sculptors. All of the works have been selected from the Arts Council Collection, which holds more than 250 sculptures by over 150 women.
