Hull Jazz Festival presents @ Hull Truck Theatre

The Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan - Vimala Rowe, Juliet Roberts & Janette Mason
Friday 19 July, 8pm, £20
An exquisite, intimate evening as the first ladies of jazz are brought to life by today’s leading ladies of vintage jazz, led by Hideaway’s musical director Janette Mason. Vimala Rowe, last seen at Hull Jazz Festival with John Etheridge in 2018, is one of the most distinctive voices on the UK jazz scene. Juliet Roberts is known to many as a house music diva, incredible jazz vocalist and a veteran of the early days of British soul. Together, they’re a vocal force to be reckoned with, as they pay tribute to two of the jazz world’s leading ladies.

John Etheridge's Sweet Chorus
Saturday 20 July, 3pm, £20
A personal tribute by guitar legend Etheridge to his mentor and inspiration, Stéphane Grappelli, who he worked with for 5 years in the 70’s and early 80’s. Taking its cue from the Hot Club of France – the legendary group led by Grappelli and Django Reinhardt – the band features John’s dazzling guitar work and the scintillating violin of Chris Garrick. The relationship of these two, alongside Dave Kelbie (guitar) and Andy Crowdy (bass), has been described as one of the most potent in European jazz.

Alina Bzhezhinska Inspiration Quartet
Saturday 20 July, 6pm, £15 (students and under-26s £6)
Ukrainian/Polish Alina Bzhezhinska – internationally acclaimed harpist/composer and winner of the PRS Women Make Music Award 2018 - celebrates the extraordinary music of Alice Coltrane and John Coltrane, as performed at the Barbican last year with her all-star Inspiration Quartet. Today’s foremost interpreter of Alice Coltrane’s spiritual jazz, Alina also presents her own stunning original work.

The Steve Williamson Experience: Steve Williamson Trio with StringTing
Saturday 20 July, 9pm, £16 (students and under-26s £6)
A rare and highly anticipated live performance by the revered, enigmatic and magnetic saxophonist/composer, Steve Williamson led the original Jazz Warriors, alongside Courtney Pine and others, who made a huge impact on the UK scene from the mid-1980s. Performing with his powerhouse young trio and members of Tomorrow’s Warriors StringTing, he explores the elements that link contemporary classical and progressive jazz composition in a show that premiered recently at the South Bank Centre.

The Roaring Girls are heading up to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with their show Beach Body Ready. They have been working hard for the last 12 months, fundraising and getting support from a whole host of organisations, and they are at the final stretch...which is where you come in.

They are running a crowdfunder to help with the last few pennies, to put fuel in the van to get them up to Edinburgh, a roof over their heads and also to provide three captioned performances, to make the show more accessible. They have some really funky rewards up for grabs, and you can read about it here.  Anything you can spare, and sharing on social media would go a really long way to helping us achieve our goal.
