Grow Festival at Hull Truck Theatre

Grow is Hull Truck Theatre’s artist development programme for artists at any age or stage in their career, designed to provide opportunities and support exciting new performances.This year’s programme will feature new exciting work from local, regional and national artists and, for the first time, will include a series of Edinburgh Festival Fringe previews. Audiences are invited to see new work either in development, tour-ready or just a sapling of an idea.
The Grow season will continue with a series of innovative performances extending into June. For the first time, Grow will also include Edinburgh Festival Fringe previews right here, in the heart of Hull. The previews will feature performances by multi-award-winning comedian and Hull native Jack Gleadow, Edinburgh award nominee Lucy Beaumont, The Kagools, Middle Child, queer artist Nathaniel Hall, and Hull-born comedian Richard Stott.

Artists and hairdressers Richard Houguez & Graham Jones present Cut, a residency project exploring themes of social expression and the acts of self-care centred around their practice of hairdressing. BBC drama Bathwater now available from Wrecking Ball Press
Bathwater, the script of Vicky Foster's BBC Radio 4 drama, has been published by Wrecking Ball Press. The book contains the full-length script, including material not aired in the radio version, and additional prose.
Bathwater is a gripping, ever-twisting, often moving, somewhat shocking and often agonising piece of work.
Poet Helen Mort, five-times winner of the Foyle Young Poets award, says that Bathwater is, "A powerful, extraordinary piece of drama. It has left me changed. Courageous and compelling poetry from a very talented writer."

Hull Truck Theatre champion access for all
Hull Truck Theatre have recently launched a bespoke new access guide for audiences who require additional access support. The six-page access guide includes information about the building and its facilities, the types of assisted performances offered and information about how best to access the theatre and purchase the appropriate tickets.
The development of this piece of literature is just one of the initiatives that the theatre is working on as they move towards a truly accessible offer to audiences. Hull Truck Theatre’s front of house and box office teams have undergone extensive dementia training to become part of the Dementia Friends programme. They are also part of the Alzheimer’s Society, the Safe Place Scheme supported by Humberside Police, the Breastfeeding Friendly Premises Award Scheme and Talking Tables.
Hull Truck Theatre have teamed up with local accessibility groups, including ‘Elephant in the Room’ to develop a suite of materials that are fit for purpose for those with access needs, including specific show related collateral where appropriate.

Hull Truck Theatre are bringing J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of the boy who wouldn’t grow up to the stage for Christmas 2019. Following the huge popularity of her festive adaptation of Oliver Twist last year, Hull Truck Theatre’s most successful Christmas show to date, playwright Deborah McAndrew returns with a brand-new adaptation of Peter Pan. The production will be directed by Hull Truck Theatre’s Artistic Director Mark Babych.

Amy Johnson Arts & Engineering Awards
We are delighted to announce that the Amy Johnson Arts & Engineering Awards are now open for applications. Funded by the proceeds from the Moth for Amy auction, the Awards aim, among other things, to encourage the participation of women in the arts and engineering and so are particularly targeted at women practitioners. They are open to people living and working in Hull and East Yorkshire.
Each year for the next four years there will be two Awards each with a maximum value of £4000. Each year we will ask applicants to focus on a different aspect of engineering. In 2019, the engineering content of the projects should be drawn from the sphere of computer and digital science and engineering, including areas such as robotics and artificial intelligence.
Full details of the Awards together with the Application Form are available on their website . The application deadline for the 2019 Awards is Friday 31 May.
Call out to writers and artists
Wrecking Ball Press are pleased to announce an open call-out to writers to submit short prose pieces (max. 1500 words) and poetry for publication in a special edition anthology in 2019. Focussing on the life and work of poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, we invite you to submit to us your writing inspired by the Ladies’ Man himself: what he meant to you, how he inspired you, how he influenced you. Words born in the emotions invoked by Cohen’s writing and music, from short stories and poems to brief autobiographical experiences.
Did you ever meet Leonard Cohen, or see him in concert? Where did he take you with his words and his songs? We would also like to invite any photographers or artists who have original work or images of Leonard Cohen from any point in his career to send submissions, too, with permissions for credited print within the anthology.
Submissions will be shortlisted and selected by poet and comedian Kate Fox, and Wrecking Ball Press editor Shane Rhodes.

Suitable for makers and carnival artists with an interest in large scale costume, this practical masterclass will involve team work. An amazing full day hands on workshop hosted by Hull Carnival Arts featuring visiting carnival artist Lewis Hunter and the EMCCAN team (East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Artists Network). The workshop will cover the following skills:
Designing large costumes for dancers, and achieving movement/animation in them.
Backpacks and building simple large costume makes
How to make big things that pack down - rodding & pipe technology
Finishing and decoration techniques
Short presentation/talk on large makes on castors and their design & construction

Free your voice and explore joyful harmony singing for pure enjoyment in the latest series of workshops. Retaining an emphasis on exploring voices in harmony, while creating beautiful music together. Led by experienced community choir leader Clare Drury, you will sing a variety of material including dipping into contemporary, folk, and world music. All songs are taught by ear, so there’s no need to read music, nor to have any previous singing experience. All you need is a desire to free your voice, and a willingness to join in with others in this friendly group and have fun.
A welcoming group for singers of all ages and abilities.
£5 per session, concessions £4, children £1 (all under 16s must be accompanied)
* Our session on 22 June is specially themed for Yellow Day.

Of benefit to individuals and organisations looking to update their understanding of child protection legislation and best practice, this course provides a full update on current child protection legislation, including the Disclosure and Barring service, the Duty to Refer and Working Together.
The day will provide in-depth practical advice to help you develop sensible structures and build confidence around child protection issues, within the context of developing and delivering creative and cultural projects for children and young people. The course also includes a “safe touch” section, exploring how child protection guidelines can be maintained within more physical art forms such as dance and theatre.

This work is to take place across our six city centre based museums as follows: Ferens Art Gallery, Hull Maritime Museum, Hands on History Museum, Hull and East Riding Museum, Streetlife Museum, Wilberforce House Museum
This piece of work must include the following elements:
Facilitated consultation session with individuals, local focus groups, advocacy groups and support organisations representing current and potential diverse audiences
Consultation with existing diverse museum audiences
Onsite, independent contractor assessment and observation of access for users at the museums sites.
Access reports for all six sites outlining key consultation findings, observations, assessments & recommendations in line with Hull Museums priorities
Implementation plans for all six sites setting out requirements for implementation of key recommendations with proposed timescales, recommended resource and indicative costs.
Provide feedback on key findings and recommendations to our local focus groups, advocacy groups, experts and agencies.
Review of our new Access and Inclusion Policy and Equality Action Plan to ensure the key findings and recommendations from the work are fully embedded.
Present the key findings, recommendations and implementation plans to our Senior Management Team and Access and Inclusion Group.
