Creative Voice would like to involve more young people in the current conversation which was launched at last year's youth arts festival.

Hull Truck Young Company present TEN, at Hull Truck Theatre

Middle Child return to Hull Truck Theatre with Us Against Whatever

Us Against Whatever follows the stories of Anna, a Polish woman who is starting to think she made a mistake in moving to Hull, and Steph, who sees her home city changing under years of austerity. The cabaret is performed in Middle Child's usual gig theatre style by a cast of actor-musicians. Audience members will be invited on stage to take part in karaoke themselves during the two intervals, as well as singalong to numbers throughout the show.

Hull Dance Youth Company - contemporary dance class for 16-19 years

The company will work with Hull Dance Choreographic Prize Winner 2018 Carla Morrill with classes aiming to develop dance technique whilst building confidence, creativity and dance and performance skills. The dance piece which will be devised over the coming weeks will look at themes of decision making; exploring ideas of positivity, strength, balance and the challenges of uncertainty.

Ferens Fine Art Lecture - Sabina Jaskot-Gill of the National Portrait Gallery, London

Ferens Fine Art Lecture Series 2019 The University of Hull’s Ferens Fine Art lectures will this year concentrate on the Art of Photography and will be held in connection with the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2018 exhibition, which is currently on display in the gallery within the Brynmor Jones Library until June 2019. Sabina Jaskot-Gill of the National Portrait Gallery, London. As Curator of Photographs (Content and Interpretation) Sabina curates the annual Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize and develops photography displays. She received an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award in 2010, completing a PhD in post-war Polish photography, jointly supervised by the University of Essex and Tate. Before being appointed Associate Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in 2016, Sabina lectured on the history and theory of photography.

Freedom Talks: In conversation with Guardian investigative journalist Annie Kelly

A landmark bill to help eradicate modern slavery received Royal Assent on 26 March 2015. The Modern Slavery Act was the first of its kind in Europe, and one of the first in the world, to specifically address slavery and trafficking in the 21st century. To mark this anniversary Freedom Festival Arts Trust (FFAT) and the University of Hull’s Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE) are joining forces to host a discussion with award-winning human rights journalist and editor of the Guardian’s Modern-day slavery in focus series Annie Kelly. The evening will also feature live spoken word and an exhibition of photographs from the Modern-day slavery in focus series called ‘Faces of Slavery’. This event is part of the ongoing ‘Freedom Talks’ a partnership between the University of Hull and Freedom Festival Arts Trust.

Creative England Launches iFeatures 2019

iFeatures is an annual feature film programme, driving the development of low-budget, high-quality debut features from daring and distinctive storytellers across the UK. The programme targets emerging writers, directors and writer/directors who have yet to make a funded feature film, and at producers who are still at an emerging stage of their career. Creative England is seeking those whose work has already garnered positive industry and/or public attention in fields from short films, theatre, TV and documentaries, to online storytelling, art film and video, video gaming, commercials/advertising, graphic novels and music promos.

The funder is looking to support high-quality, low-budget films budgeted between £500,000 and £750,000.

iFeatures 2019 is open for applications until 9am on Friday 29 March 2019.

Hull Late Starters Salon Orchestra – callout for players

This small orchestra, formed in Summer 2018, is for elementary and intermediate players. 

Are you a late starter or a re-starter?  Minimum standard required is music exam Grade 2 or equivalent.  If you would like help in finding a teacher to enable you to reach the required standard, please contact HuLSSO for details.  

They would be interested in players of any stringed instruments including guitars, any woodwind instruments including recorders, brass instruments of all sizes, and anyone who would like to play a percussion instrument or bring and play their own keyboard. Music stands will be provided.

The Chamber Culture Fund Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce Application deadline 12 midday on Monday 18th March 2019 A single award of £4,000 The Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce are pleased to invite applications to the Chamber Culture Fund. The fund was launched to commemorate the organisation’s 180th anniversary and Hull’s status as the 2017 UK City of Culture. The first award was made in 2018. Do you have an ambitious and artistic idea? Do you want to test out new work which will further develop your practice? The Chamber invites applications from artists and organisations based in the Hull and Humber region for a single monetary award of £4,000. We are keen to support the development of exceptional arts and culture projects. Successful applicants will also be allocated a mentor who will offer advice and support during the project, adding to the overall development experience. The awards are open to artists and organisations working in any discipline – this can include literature, music, visual art, the performing arts, digital media, performance and other artforms, or any combination of these. The Sunny Art Prize

The Prize is organised annually by the Sunny Art Centre in London, and offers a selection of thirty artists the opportunity to take part in international activities, including exhibitions and a residency.

Launch of the 2019 Moth International Short Story Prize

The Moth International Short Story Prize supports the work of short story writers through monetary awards and writing retreat opportunities.The competition also includes the publication of award winning work, giving the writers in question a creative platform for their work.

The first prize is a monetary award worth €3,000. The second prize will be a week-long writing retreat at Circle of Misse in France (this prize includes a sum of €250 for the purposes of covering travel costs). The third prize is a monetary sum of €1,000. The prize winning stories will also be published in The Moth.

This competition is open to anybody aged 18 and over who wishes to submit an original, previously unpublished short story. Applicants may submit as many stories as they wish. Entrants may be based anywhere in the world.

The deadline for applications is 30 June 2019.

Saturday Sing - vocal harmony workshops

At Artlink, 87 Princes Ave, Hull

Free your voice and explore joyful harmony singing for pure enjoyment in the latest series of workshops.  Retaining an emphasis on exploring voices in harmony, while creating beautiful music together. Led by experienced community choir leader Clare Drury, you will sing a variety of material including dipping into contemporary, folk, and world music.  All songs are taught by ear, so there’s no need to read music, nor to have any previous singing experience.  All you need is a desire to free your voice, and a willingness to join in with others in this friendly group and have fun.

A welcoming group for singers of all ages and abilities.

10:30am to 12.00pm on Saturdays 23 March and 27 April 2019.

Abbacapella

Join Hull Freedom Chorus for a one off singing day celebrating the songs of Abba. Find your inner Agentha, unleash your Frida, and set your Benny and Bjorn loose with a day of fun, singing a selection from the back catalogue of the Swedish super group.

This workshop led by choral leader and master musician Ben Newton, is about having pure fun singing a selection of the back catalogue of Abba, from iconic songs you love to some of the more obscure, there will be something to delight all Abba fans.  It's a fun day to celebrate these massive icons of pop.  No need to read music, just come along and have fun.

Prior booking is essential as places are limited.  Participants will be expected to bring their own lunch and mug.

This one off day will be charged on a pay what you feel on the day basis. Places are limited and pre-booking is essential.
