In this issue
The last City Arts Forum – in September had a Literature theme. Thanks to those who attended and contributed to the discussion.
During discussion about advice available, those present were reminded that Arts Development Officers are available to meet for advice on developing artists/organisations and with applications to ACE. It was mooted that regular drop ins might be helpful. Other advice is available from HIPI (theatre and touring expertise) and ENRG (business). Interesting discussion focused around the following: Progression routes; the offer to local writers; recognising talent; engagement and support of young people; support for talent development; and the role of festivals.
It was stressed that festivals offered support for talent development by offering mentoring schemes, commissions, and a chance to show work. Festivals welcome conversations all year round. Current festivals represented were: Humber Mouth, Big Malarkey, Hull Noir.
During discussion themes raised included: The importance of working in partnership; monthly literature events would support artist development. Spoken word events currently include: Women and Words, Away with Words, Head in a Book. The library service was keen to offer venues for events. Effective marketing and international development were also mentioned.

Youth Movement Dance Class
With Ellen Turner from Turn around Dance Company.
Sunday 21 October 2-4pm, free, Anlaby Studios
Ellen Turner is an energetic dance artist and choreographer twitching with energy. After having a colourful dance career working with Ludus Dance Company, Tmesis Theatre, Yael Flexer, TC Howard, Tim Casson, Ben Wright, Gary Clarke, and Nigel Charnock, Ellen was inspired to create her own work. In 2012 she won The Turn prize of choreographic achievement for her solo ‘Car-Door Moment’ and in 2014, Ellen formed TurnAround Dance Theatre with her sisters.
Their work has an innocence that explores the relationship between them as well as their rural Lancashire background. Ellen has also been massively influenced by physical theatre, which is evident in her work today.
Ellen’s workshop will have a high, fast paced, positive energy that will test our own sense of musicality and use of imagery. It will be an opportunity to create, imagine and play.
Learn a new dance style with a contemporary flavour, Influence your own and regional youth dance development!
