à cappella * great songs * comedy * perpendicularity
‘one of the funniest bands ever - still chuckling’ Mike Harding ‘Good stories, spectacular singing!’ Mark Radcliffe, R2 The Folk Show
When The Spooky Men’s Chorale retreated to Australia, after their sell-out 2017 UK Tour, a few stalwarts remained. Like a tide-mark in the enamel bath of song, this six piece of Brits are keeping the flame of Spookiness alive.
A Fistful of Spookies are made up of professional singers and choir-leaders from across the UK who have all toured with the Spookies and have enough voices to recreate the complete Spooky canon of achingly beautiful and wonderfully daft songs.
For newcomers to the Spooky phenomenon, they have redefined the whole notion of male singing, from anthems extolling the virtues of power tools and the joys of doing nothing (at all) to ancient Icelandic hymns and Georgian work songs as well as award-winning covers of Abba & Bowie, sensational stylings of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen & The Beach Boys and their defiant assertion that they are definitely not a men’s group. Coming together from all
corners of the UK, they will reprise classics from the Spooky canon of
testosterone-fuelled, tunes and tomfoolery.

What Is? Collective
Where: A secret location When: Sunday 16 September
A What Is? event typically features visual artists, writers, musicians, performers, mysterious sound and lighting and a leap into the unknown.
What is … Earth? To you? For this What Is? we will be taken on a breathtaking and inspiring tour to an exhibition in a secret location that will put you in the perfect position to contemplate this awesome question. The cross-discipline artists of What is? collective have been asking themselves the question and working together to create an experience for you. All art is specially created for the event and location,
in response to the theme. The location in unexpected, intimate and we look forward to a fun evening. A unique experience is guaranteed.
Part exhibition, part performance, here’s something that you may never have experienced before. Artists are paired. One creates, one responds. Both reflect on the chosen theme and go on their own journey of self-inquiry and reflection.
Previous What Is? events have taken place at Hull’s Bankside and in rediscovered spaces, such as an old shop, heritage space, a disused office, somewhere with a view, a forgotten but amazing space no longer in use; spaces that are intimate and offer an unexpected adventure. The result is as satisfying to audience members as it is to those creating the work. This promises to be a memorable occasion in the company of a collective of artists seeking new ways to work.

Richard Lees' "Writing Dangerously"
The exhibition is open 12-5pm Tuesday to Saturday & 12-4pm on Sundays until Sunday 23 September. Free entry. HIP Gallery
Richard Lees' "Writing Dangerously" focuses on two literary giants, Mary McCarthy and Arundhati Roy, who each showed the courage of their beliefs by going to front line war zones – Vietnam for McCarthy and central India for Roy – to find the truth buried beneath the lies and propaganda, and to write honestly about the realities they discovered.
Roy’s Walking With the Comrades (2011) and McCarthy’s Seventeenth Degree (1974) powerfully represent communities fighting back against the brutal onslaught of state war machines and the destruction of natural resources. For both the North Vietnamese and the Naxalites in central India, defending their lands against invasions and degradation is the root of their political struggle; Richard hopes that "Writing Dangerously" visually represents this deeply felt, communal connection to the lands they fight to protect.

OpenCampus Reading Group – North
American Fictions, The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), Margaret Atwood
Saturday 22 September, 2pm
Free
Brynmor Jones Library University of
Hull, HU6 7RX
Speaker: Layla Hendow, PhD
Candidate in English Literature, University of Hull. Margaret Atwood’s The
Handmaid’s Tale (1985) is a hugely popular novel, with an acclaimed television
adaptation currently being screened. The novel is renowned for its powerful and
moving feminist themes, and has been recognised by readers for decades as a
peerless piece of science-fiction that can feel worryingly plausible. There
could be no better host for this session than Layla Hendow, who not only
researches dystopian novels, but contributed to the Under Her Eye: Women and
Climate Change conference starring Atwood herself. This has been a much
requested text for the reading group, and is an excellent introduction to
Atwood’s compelling, distinctive fiction.
