'Unseen Beings' Community Dance Project

Choreographers Jo Ashbridge and Tamar Draper are holding an exciting dance-theatre project throughout August, culminating in a performance at this year's Freedom Festival. Absolutely no dance experience is necessary to take part. The pair are currently developing a duet originally inspired by the 2017 Turner Prize exhibition, and will create this larger-scale version with community members as part of their project research and development. The piece looks at themes of collective and individual identity, place, community and belonging, with each performer costumed in a long garment from head to toe that hides the identity whilst enabling a different level of expression.

Participants will engage in a series of fun yet challenging creating sessions where they will be central to the devising of the work through creative tasks and simple improvisations, as well as learning group choreography. They will perform the piece on the Stage@ The Dock on Freedom Festival's busy and popular Saturday afternoon.

Tamar and Jo are particularly interested in engaging with those with little or no previous dance experience, however the project is open to anyone aged 16+ and experienced dancers are also welcome. It is hoped that a place can be offered to everyone but in the case that interest exceeds the number of places available, selections with be made with diversity of participants in mind.

Check out their facebook site for more information.

Ticket price: Adult £5; Concessions/Students £3

An interactive Anglo-Icelandic Twitter opera that ask: where do we live today? On or offline? When Justie sends a misguided tweet she employs her colleague Talon to try and fix the mounting backlash on social media. Meanwhile his wife Finna, a famous lifestyle vlogger, begins an online affair with recluse Freyja. ‘#echochamber’ explores how we ‘make mistakes’ online inspired by Jon Ronson’s book ’So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed’. This Anglo-Icelandic opera invites audiences to tweet their ‘deepest, darkest secrets’ onto a live twitter feed as we contemplate: “where do we live nowadays? On or offline?”

#echochamber makes its UK premiere in Hull, before touring the country. This interactive opera brings together elements of musical theatre, video and spoken word, as well as opera, inviting audience to tweet in real time to the characters on stage. Have you ever put something online that you regret? #echochamber asks just that, and much more, as we delve deeper into how one social media mishap can ruin our lives.
