Hull Dance Youth Company selected for Fresh 2018

Saturday 24 March - 7.30pm

York Theatre Royal

Hull Dance Youth Company have been selected to perform at Fresh 2018 at York Theatre Royal on Saturday 24 March.

“Me. You. Us.” is a display of youth: getting rid of inhibitions and having the most fun possible on stage. The piece has emerged through an autobiographical themed process and through nonsense and play, the dancers frolic between a mixture of live improvisation scores and set material to challenge the more common expectation of youth dance performances. Fresh 2018 is a breathtaking celebration of the achievements of our regions young dancers. Experience an amazing range of dance styles from the very finest youth dance companies from across Yorkshire.

A panel of judges will select a group to represent Yorkshire at U.Dance 2018 in Suffolk

Tickets: £6-£8

Following the sell-out productions of Our Mutual Friend and Defiance, Hull Truck Youth Theatre’s 16+ groups are joining forces for the first time with three of Hull Truck Theatre’s Supported Companies, some of the most exciting independent theatre companies in Hull, fresh from their own success in the city and beyond.

Bellow Theatre, The Roaring Girls and Silent Uproar are working with around 15 Youth Theatre members each to create unique productions based on the young peoples’ ideas, which will be performed by the Youth Theatre members themselves.

Each theatre company are using their own theatre-making techniques to bring the shows to life - Bellow Theatre and Silent Uproar’s shows are based on specially commissioned scripts, whilst The Roaring Girls are devising their show from the Youth Theatres’ personal experiences.

What About the Children? with Bellow Theatre is a Him and Her story of friendship, knee grazes and old school crisps, and is written by Bellow Theatre’s Maureen Lennon. It’s presented in a double bill with The Roaring Girls’. When Everything Stops, a devised show about the importance of time and using your voice, The two groups have been in intensive rehearsals during half term this week.

Silent Uproar’s Human Electric Tree is written by Sunday Times award-winning playwright Josh Overton (Sad Little Man) and is directed by Alex Mitchell, and explores the systems we put young people through on the path to adulthood. Her work ‘Uninvited Guests’ was published by Indigo Dreams in September 2017. Our local guest is Polly Pattison who will be delighting us once more with letters exchanged by her Mother and Father during WW2. Open mic spots available (time allowing).
