Songs of Freedom – celebrating the legacy of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in Hull

Sunday 5 November starting 2:10pm at Wilberforce House Gardens and proceeding to 2:30pm-3pm at Hull Minster

A group of 100 singers from Hull Freedom Chorus and beyond come together on the afternoon of Sunday 5 November to honour and celebrate the legacy of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in free performances in Hull Minster and the City Centre. Led by singing leader Michael Harper, these performances are the produce of a weekend of workshops.

If you’re not aware of the Fisk Jubilee singers,(a group of former slaves from Nashville who toured Europe in 1870s) you will certainly have come across their music (such as, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and John Brown’s Body), or music which they influenced, such as blues, jazz, gospel, soul, rock and roll, and songs of the civil rights movements. Read more online about the Fisk Jubilee Singers in Hull.

Weather permitting on 5 November, the 100 strong group will sing at some of the sites associated with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and William Wilberforce.  Free to watch – this is the culmination of a weekend of local singers working with renowned leader Michael Harper.

Performances will be sign language interpreted.

Organised by Hull City Council’s Arts Development, as part of the Singing City initiative.

Singing for blokes, chaps and other men

Saturday 25 November 2017, 10am-4:30pm

At Albemarle Music Centre, Ferensway, Hull

Free Singing Workshop day led by member of the amazing Spooky Men's Chorale - Dominic Stichbury

Are you a man? Have you ever experienced the power of the male voice multiplied? Men are underrepresented in most UK choirs so since 2013 it has been choir leader Dominic Stichbury’s aim to get more men singing.

In this one day workshop, Dominic will teach a variety of songs - from the rousing to the beautiful - arranged especially for male voices and allowing participants to stretch beyond the baselines and dum dums they may be accustomed to. All parts will be taught by ear in an inclusive & welcoming way. He is particularly encouraging of those men whose last singing memory was in school uniform.

Dominic is founder and leader of London based Chaps Choir - which has come to represent a new page in male voice singing - and London's only inclusive male community choir Bellow Fellows. Many men in his choirs report they’re surprised to be members, but very glad they took the plunge.

Places are limited so pre-booking is essential.

Book your place online via Hull Box Office.

Organised by Hull City Council’s Arts Development, as part of the Singing City initiative.

Funke and the Two Tone Baby / Rosemary's Baby / Flora Greysteel

Thursday 2 November, 8.30pm, £7

The New Adelphi Club, HU5 2RU

We Are Awayke proudly present with immense joy, excitement and anticipation. The 15th instalment of super audio aceness.

Funke and the Two Tone Baby is a one man sonic explosion. Uncategorized and uncharted. Jammed halfway between frenzied alt-blues and metronomic dance beats. Combining guitar and harmonica with beatboxing and effects that seamlessly collide the organic with the mechanical to create a fresh sound of unstoppable rhythm and unrelenting melody.

Beyond the double microphones and trademark trilby is Dan Turnbull, a multi-instrumental battery spinning musical plates. A powerhouse to the ears and a blur to the eyes who smashes stage, festival and string after string whilst sweeping up audiences and dropping jaws from Boomtown Fair to Kendal Calling and Secret Garden Party to Convoi de Fete (NL).

Rosemary’s Baby shoot urban riot growl and anti-folk delivered via the medium of super tight uke, bass and heart, body and mind. No effects, no fuss and blisteringly superb soulful vocals. Boom.

Flora Greysteel bond elements of cabaret, rip-roaring choruses and choral elegance giving way to moments of intimate reflection, sea shanties and electronica-pop. Colourful, theatrical, beguiling.

Information and news

Brighton Festival names visual artist David Shrigley as 2018 Guest Director

Brighton Festival is delighted to announce that the 2018 Guest Director is the Brighton-based visual artist David Shrigley.

Best known for his distinctive drawing style and works that make satirical comments on the absurdity of 21st-century society, Shrigley's darkly humorous compositions reflect the inconsequential, the bizarre, and the disquieting elements of daily life. While drawing is at the centre of his practice, his work spans an extensive range of media including sculpture, large-scale installation, animation, painting, photography and music.

Widely admired by the art world and public alike, David Shrigley was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize in 2013 for his solo show David Shrigley: Brain Activity at the Hayward Gallery. In September 2016, Really Good, a 7 metre-high elongated bronze sculpture of a thumbs-up, was unveiled as the latest incumbent of Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth - described as the ‘tallest and most positive yet'. An active member of the Save the Arts campaign, Shrigley recently contributed a series of illustrations depicting the benefits of the arts to health and wellbeing to accompany a report published by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing.
