City Arts with Spin Off Productions presents Colours of Music Orchestra “Colours of Freedom”
Saturday 1 July, 2pm, Horncastle Building, Hull College
What does freedom mean to you? Five groups of young people worked with poet Cassandra Parkin to put their thoughts down on paper. These poems have then been used to shape the concert with soundscapes, art installations, song, spoken word and animation. Students involved are from Frederick Holmes, Northcott, Ganton and Tweendykes Schools as well as young people from Hull Rhythm Pixies. They have worked with artists Gary Hammond, David Barton, Liz Dees, Donna Smith, Daniel Arce, and Peter Snelling. The project has received funding from Hull City Council and Youth Music.
The performance is open to the public and tickets are available to book via email spinofftheatre@spinofftheatre.karoo.co.uk

In the 2017 City Of Culture and LGBT 50 celebrations it is appropriate to remember a forgotten hero of Hull, Dan Billany. An activist, teacher, novelist and soldier in WWII, Billany and fellow prisoner, David Dowie, went missing after being released from a POW camp in Italy in 1943. Their fate remains unknown to this day.
HERO, a play by Hull writer, Barrie Wheatley is based on the Billany biography, Dan Billany: Hull’s Lost Hero, by Valerie A. Reeves and Valerie Showan, two Hull writers. Their biography was the result of a lifetime’s interest, which began after they read Billany’s, The Magic Door, when they were young girls. HERO, the play, combines fact and dramatic fiction to bring Billany’s story to life. It draws on extracts from Billany’s novel, The Cage, written with David Dowie, as well as his other wartime novel, The Trap, to develop a tense and revealing story.
