Bunkerpop vs. The Immigrants
Saturday 10 June, 8.30pm
The New Adelphi Club, De Grey Street, Hull, HU5 2RU
£5 on the door
We Are Awayke proudly present by popular demand with huge joy and excitement. A Krautrock Jazzmanian musical exposé.
Bunkerpop sprang to life in 2016 and are a beat driven human machine of five souls who combine the hypnotic rhythms of Krautrock with a highly charged supergroove. They graced a series of fantastic shows and events last year culminating in a now legendary performance at The Adelphi and then vanished. They now return and we are presenting them alongside another magnificent act.
The Immigrants are a seven piece freestyle funked up jazz instrumental group who emerged from a series of late night free-for-all jam sessions and crystallised in their current form of soprano saxophone, guitars, viola, keyboards and drums & bass in late 2015. They launched the Hull Fringe (City of Culture 2017) event at O’Riley’s, performed at the closing night of Hull’s ‘Red Gallery’ and have played inspiring sets at ‘Ground’ Gallery and ‘Hull Heard’ events.
This is an evening to dance to the abstract pronouncements and audio-visual chaos of B. Pop contrasting with The Immigrants bringing peace & love via the medium of Jazztastic funky psychedelia.
There will be mirth and there will be joy of great size.

Hate crime is an ominous, prevailing presence in our society. Borders, barriers and warning signs have come to be part of our everyday life, but are we being kept out, or is something being kept in?
The Electric Fence encourages us to examine the perceptions, challenges and preconceptions that impact us all and compels us to turn to face them.
A bold, visceral confrontation, Annabel McCourt’s thought-provoking installation appears ‘live’, providing a powerful and macabre reminder of our own latent potential. Stark and unforgettable, The Electric Fence awaits you…
Grimsby-born artist Annabel McCourt has a diverse portfolio with work ranging from lens-based gritty social-realism, through to installation art, moving image and architectural interventions, inspired by fact, folklore & legend. She will be drawing on this experience and using cutting edge technology in the creation of the Electric Fence for Hull 2017 UK City of Culture.

Beverley Folk Festival.
16-18 June
Beverley Racecourse, York Rd, Beverley, HU17 8QZ
Beverley Folk Festival will once again feature a wealth of exciting young singers, musicians and performers - your chance to see the stars of tomorrow today.
The Beverley Folk Festival has two important youth arms:
The ‘Westwood Sessions’ and the acclaimed ‘Area 2’.
Nikki Airey, a young musician in her own right, works hard to coordinate and organise the ‘Westwood Sessions’ for those aged 11 to 25. The object is to give young talent a stage to perform on and a group of friends to foster, care and develop their performance skills. In Nikki’’s own words “By working together and supporting each other we build a team spirit and help giving each other confidence. Getting up to perform is a difficult thing but with the support of friends anything is possible”. The ‘Westwood Sessions’ will be there in force in June running open mike sessions and they will even be offering a CD recording facility, for only £5 artists can book a slot and cut their own CD! Now that is something special.
Area 2 is organised by professional musician and East Yorkshire lad Sam Pirt. Sam has a deep love of music and performance and has a keen interest in developing young musicians to the next level. Drawing not only from the local area but also nationwide ‘Area 2’ will give some great young talent the opportunity to perform on a festival stage. Sam commented, “As a touring musician I see and hear a lot of young talent around the country. The ‘Area 2 ‘ stage in Beverley gives me the opportunity to showcase exciting and innovative musicians. These musicians really are the voice, sound, and future of live music, innovative, creative and above all talented. It is a privilege to help them and to work with them”.

Sock puppet fun at the Big Malarkey
In the run up to the festival, Hull Library Services are inviting the children of Hull to find an odd sock and make it into a puppet to bring along to the festival.
The Big Malarkey is Hull’s first ever children’s literature festival and will be held in East Park from 26 June – 2 July. As well as writers, poets and illustrators there’ll be plenty of puppetry.
Need some help? A sock puppet-making demo can be found on Hull Libraries YouTube channel.
The Oddsox project is funded through the J Venn Foundation, a charity that promotes reading, writing and extra-curricular activities.
The Big Malarkey runs from Monday 26 June - Sunday 2 July, on East Park, Holderness Road, Hull.
Details of the festival are online. Entry is free but tickets are required for Saturday and Sunday, via the website.
Go ‘speed dating’ with seven authors at Beverley Library
Saturday 10 June, 1-3.30pm
Keen readers and aspiring authors are being invited to go ‘Author Speed Dating’ at Beverley Library – and you don’t even have to be single.
Seven authors from across the literary spectrum will visit the library to each give a short talk about their work and career and then meet members of the public afterwards.
Each author will have 10 minutes to speak to the audience about their writing, their inspirations, how they got their work published, what they are working on now, and maybe even give a reading.
Once every writer has given their talk, the audience will be free to move around the room chatting to the authors and getting tips and ideas for themselves, or to simply purchase books.
The authors taking part in the event are:
Val Pate – Millie Loves Autumn/The Fox and the Hedgehog (Children's)
Cassandra Parkin – Lily’s House/The Beach Hut (Adult Fiction)
Martin Gore – The Road to Cromer Pier (2016) Pen Pals (First Novel/Adult Fiction)
John Ashbrook – Twisted 50 Horror (Short Stories)
Colin and Fleur Speakman – The Yorkshire Wolds – A Journey of Discovery (Non Fiction/Local Interest)
Catherine Scott – The Brazen Maiden (Poetry)
The event is the first of its kind to be held in East Riding Libraries.
Tracey Booth, librarian at Beverley Library, said: “If you’ve read everything by your favourite authors and are looking for something new to try, why not let a collection of handpicked authors pitch for your affections and rekindle your love of reading?
“This ‘Author Speed Dating’ event is perfect for anyone who enjoys readying or finding out about new authors, and especially anyone aspiring to become an author.”
Tickets for the ‘Author Speed Dating’ event cost £2 each and are available from Beverley Library, by phone on 01482 392699, or online
Booking is essential as places are limited. The event is not suitable for children.

Commissioning of Monument - Design and Build
The Hull International Brigades Memorial Group is seeking expressions
of interest from artists and sculptors as part of the commissioning of a public
sculptural memorial to the men of Hull and East Riding who volunteered to fight
against Fascism in the Spanish Civil War, 1936—39.
Our starting view is that we would like the memorial to be built with
stone and steel, although other materials will be considered.
The theme of the sculpture should consider appropriate symbolism from
the period and the events that took place, evoking the bravery and political
will that all the men displayed .
It should be a approximately 6ft high and 4ft wide and contain the
names of all the local volunteers. The design should also discretely allow the
inclusion of the main organisations that have publicly subscribed to the
project.
It is intended that the monument will be situated outside the side
entrance of the Treasury Building on Queens Gardens between the flagpoles and
we would like the sculpture to be ready for unveiling in October 2018.
Please contact Andy Stankard for further details –
