Microbiology laboratory safety: The fundamentals

The Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) provides guidance on working safely with hazardous biological agents in containment level 2 (CL2) and containment level 3 (CL3) laboratories.

This one-day course covers essential safety practices for microbiological laboratory work, providing an overview of hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures required to work safely in CL2 and CL3 environments.

Delegates will be provided with information that will help them to:

  • identify common hazards in CL2 and CL3 laboratory environments
  • conduct a risk assessment
  • identify laboratory control measures, including engineering, administrative and personal controls
  • know how to safely handle laboratory waste
  • respond appropriately to an emergency
  • understand the importance of training and competency in relation to laboratory safety
