You can download our leaflet Maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments. It sets out simple and sensible precautions you should take to prevent danger from portable or movable electrical equipment.

HSE's website also has general advice on electrical safety at work.

Six-figure fine for construction firm after joiner crushed to death

A construction company has been fined £146,000 after a joiner was crushed and killed by a 20-tonne excavator.

The worker was on a road above the work area waiting for the excavator to remove sand from trench boxes when it rotated clockwise and crushed him.

HSE's investigation found that the work had not been adequately planned and the risk not adequately assessed. In addition, no instruction had been given to the digger operator, and there was no segregation of pedestrians and plant in this area of the site.

Read this press release for more details on the incident.

Our website has guidance on working with excavators.
