Introducing Chris Austin, Head of Training and Events from HSE
Chris Austin joined HSE in January 2022 as HSE’s Head of Training and Events. Responsible for creating and delivering high-quality health and safety training to thousands of delegates each year, it’s been a busy start for Chris so far, but we’ve managed to grab five minutes out of his day to ask him a few questions about how he’s finding this important role at HSE.
What attracted you to the job?
Primarily the opportunity to make a difference. I strongly believe that everyone has the right to go to work and expect to come home safe and well at the end of their day – I’m delighted to be able to play my small part in helping to ensure this happens.
How have you found it so far?
It’s been a VERY busy few months, but I love it! Everyone that I have met so far, including our scientists and trainers, policy colleagues and inspectors have been extremely welcoming. The work that we do here at HSE is world class, and I’m in awe of the level and sheer amount of technical knowledge that our scientists have, and everyone’s devotion to help protect people and places.
What are you looking forward to?
Helping to transfer that knowledge and devotion into lots of new and exciting training and event projects, which are all aligned to HSE’s new strategy and priority areas. I’m looking forward to seeing these come to fruition, and being able to see the impact that they will have.
I’m also looking forward to meeting more of our clients and talking about the ways that we can help them, whether that’s through helping them manage their health and safety risks, or supporting them in influencing their organisation’s safety culture.
What brings you to work each day?
I have always been driven by the opportunity to make a positive contribution, and what better impact is there than helping to keep people and places safe and well in their work? I feel privileged to be part of HSE, who do this each and every day.
What’s your biggest claim to fame?
Hailing from Stoke on Trent, I was really proud to play a key role in securing the accolade of ‘European City of Sport’ for the city. It was wonderful to see the impact that this had on the lives of local people and their communities and I was really fortunate to rub shoulders with a whole host of famous people as part of the process, including Olympic champions and members of the royal family!
