Decision on approval of GB PPP new active substance

Applications for the first approval of new active substances in GB are regulated under retained Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009.

Applicant:  BASF Agro B.V

Substance: Cinmethylin – herbicidal active substance for controlling the growth of annual grasses and several broadleaf weed species in cereals

HSE’s Conclusion on Cinmethylin was published on 20 May: Cinmethylin Conclusion of the Authority (.PDF) and concluded that the active substance is expected to meet the approval criteria, the risk assessment which underpins the Conclusion having been subject to public consultation and independent scientific advice from the Expert Committee on Pesticides (ECP). The input provided through these processes was considered by HSE when finalising the Conclusion on this new active substance.

HSE referred its Conclusion and intended decision to GB administrations, as required under the Agency Agreements between HSE and the individual administrations.

The necessary agreements were given and HSE’s decision is that Cinmethylin should be approved as a new active substance and is now listed in the GB Pesticides Approvals Register.

Consequently, plant protection products containing Cinmethylin can be authorised in GB, in accordance with the requirements of retained Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009.

Cinmethylin has also now been added to the GB MRL Statutory Register.

New version of the MACRO higher tier drainflow (HTDF) modelling tool for pesticide registration

When you apply for registration of a pesticide in GB and NI, you need to submit an assessment of surface water exposure via drainflow. If you cannot show an acceptable risk using lower tier methods, you will need to submit a higher tier drainflow (HTDF) exposure assessment.

A new MACRO 5 version of the tool (v2.0) to assist applicants in HTDF exposure assessments is now available and will replace the current MACRO 4 version (v1.1) after 31 May 2023.

The MACRO 5 HTDF tool is compatible with Windows 10 and applicants are encouraged to use this going forward. It is available to download here.

HSE will continue to accept HTDF assessments performed using either the MACRO 4 or MACRO 5 tools during the period up to 31 May 2023.

After this date, HSE will only accept HTDF modelling that uses the MACRO 5 HTDF tool.

View more background information on the MACRO 5 tool.

Our website also provides further information on both tools.
