FOR ACTION
HSE publish annual statistics of RIDDOR notifiable deaths arising from a work-related accident (Reg 6(1)), including deaths in LA enforced workplaces. The next published update will be early summer and will include provisional statistics of fatal injuries sustained in 2021/22, as well as finalised numbers for 2020/21.
HSE statisticians have begun work verifying fatal injury cases reported via the RIDDOR notification database for deaths up to 31 December 2021. You may already have received an email asking to confirm if certain fatal injury reports accepted on the database by your local authority meet RIDDOR reporting requirements.
Your help is vital. Last year we had a tremendous response to the exercise with responses from over 99% of LAs approached – let’s aim for 100% this year!
To ensure that the count of RIDDOR reportable fatal injuries sustained in LA enforced workplaces is complete:
- any notifiable fatal injury reported directly to an LA should be input onto the RIDDOR notification database by the relevant LA. (See para 4.3 of Incident Selection Criteria Guidance - HSE and LAs working together)
- similarly, any death that has been notified to the LA on the RIDDOR notification database as a non-fatal injury should be re-input as a fatal notification
- please ensure that all such incidents relating to either 2020/21 or 2021/22 are entered on the RIDDOR notification database by 31 March. Further guidance is available to download from HELex
- any work-related fatal injury not recorded on the RIDDOR notification database by this date will not be included in the statistics release this summer
We would be grateful if you could share this information with relevant colleagues within your local authority for them to action.
FOR POSSIBLE ACTION
PIPA is an inspection scheme set up by the inflatable play industry to ensure that children’s inflatable play equipment conforms to recognised standards.
It is the HSE recognised and supported scheme for the inspection and testing of amusement devices as set out in HSG 175 Fairgrounds and amusement parks: Guidance on safe practice.
PIPA have recently produced guidance on the use of inflatable play equipment on hard standing outdoors, which provides useful information about the precautions that need to be taken to ensure the safety of the devices.
As there is expected to be a significant increase on the use of inflatable play equipment this year at street parties etc to celebrate the Queens Jubilee this guidance will be of assistance to the hirers and organisers of such events to ensure safety.
