As lockdown measures ease, we must all remain vigilant of the risk of Coronavirus and organisations should continue to keep COVID-secure measures in place.
In the coming weeks, HSE will be carrying out spot checks and inspections on further education (FE) providers in England and Wales to check they are following the relevant government guidelines on being COVID-secure. This follows on from similar work previously carried out in Scotland.
This will start week commencing Monday 17 May 2021 and will be done by calls and visits to colleges to review the measures taken to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Calls made to FE providers will evaluate their knowledge and awareness of the relevant government guidance - Further education coronavirus (COVID-19) operational guidance (England), and Guidance for safe operation of post-16 learning from 12 April 2021 (Wales) - and the control measures they have put in place to manage the risk of Coronavirus.
Where the initial call raises concerns, the college will be referred for a further intervention. This may include a visit to the school to check a suitable and sufficient risk assessment has been carried out and effective controls have been implemented in line with the latest guidance. Where concerns remain, the college will be referred to an HSE inspector to carry out a spot inspection.
HSE is looking to work with employers during the checks and inspections by providing advice and guidance on how to manage the risks posed by the virus in the workplace. Most of the checks HSE has undertaken have shown that employers are making workplace adjustments in line with the recommended COVID-secure guidance.
