Clean and Green update: March 2026

Welcome to this month's Clean and Green update.

March's edition features some great news about Isleworth allotments, progress on our innovative Right to Grow policy, and new nature-based flood defences helping protect riverside communities.

We've also been cleaning up a fly-tipping hotspot in Cranford with our partners at Hounslow Highways, representing Hounslow at the national Climate Emergency UK and making our streets safer for pedestrians and wheelchair users.

Councillor Katherine Dunne, Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport 

Earlier this month, Councillor Dunne spoke at the Accelerating Local Climate Action conference, hosted by Climate Emergency UK. CE UK put together regular climate scorecards to see how councils across the country are progressing with climate action.

Their latest report, released this month, shows that several things are correlated with better performance - spending power, political leadership and engagement, and public pressure.

Chiswick Repair Cafe

The Chiswick Repair Cafe is a voluntary initiative helping strengthen local communities and reduce waste through events where volunteers help residents to mend broken or worn items.

With regular events taking place place at Christ Church Turnham Green once a month, the Repair Cafe will also be hosting a Repair Showcase at Hounslow House on Saturday, 18 April from 10:30 am to 1pm. 

Enhancing flood protection for Hounslow 

In March, the Council, alongside Thames Water completed a five year programme to deliver nine new Sustainable Drainage Schemes (SuDS).

These nature-based solutions catch rainwater where it falls, slow its flow, allow it to soak into the ground, and reduce pressure on the sewer system, significantly lowering the risk of surface water flooding.

The schemes have made these areas greener, more resilient to extreme weather, and richer in biodiversity through new plant species and attractive features, including a popular pump track at Beaversfield Park that has become a hit for scooters, bikes, and running circuits.

Prioritising pedestrians

The Council is delivering on its commitment to improve pedestrian safety for those walking and wheeling on our streets.

Since 2022:

• 16 new zebra crossings have been installed and seven existing crossings upgraded
• Four new pelican crossings have been introduced
• £2m has been committed through our Pavement Pledge initiative to improve the condition and safety of footways 

Cleaning up fly-tipping hotspot

On 5 March, Church Road in Cranford was the focus of a clean-up and enforcement operation led by Hounslow Highways with support from the Council. 

The operation saw years of large-scale illegal dumping of commercial and household waste in the area cleaned up and £30,000 worth of fines issued to 30 individuals for fly-tipping offences.

The long-term future of Park Road Allotments has been secured after Hounslow Council signed an agreement with the Northumberland Estates, to lease the land and preserve it as allotments.The lease sees the management of the Isleworth return to the Council for at least the next 24 years.

It will allow allotment holders to continue to grow fruit and vegetables on plots some have tended for decades, and will allow the Council to restore the site, re-let vacant plots, and protect the area's wildlife and biodiversity.
