Holocaust Memorial Day: Remembering the past, shaping the future
On Tuesday, 27 January, the Leader of the Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, and the Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Amy Croft, attended a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Heston Community School.
The service provided a powerful moment of reflection, bringing together students, staff, and community representatives to remember the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust and to honour the survivors. It also served as a reminder of the importance of education, remembrance, and standing against hatred in all its forms.
Speaking at the event, Councillor Rajawat highlighted the lasting significance of Holocaust Memorial Day, saying: “We can both learn from and about the Holocaust, for a better future.”

A logical visit to Hounslow House
It was great to welcome students from Feltham’s Logic Studio School at Hounslow House earlier this week.
They quizzed the Leader of the Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat and members of the Cabinet including Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Education, Children, Skills and Employment and senior officers. They also discussed the issues they care about, including how specific services work with schools and enhance career opportunities for all our young people including those with SEND.
Maybe we met some future Council leaders? Thanks for coming - you’re a credit to the borough.
Inspiring young readers at Oriel Primary School
Year 2 pupils at Oriel Primary School enjoyed a memorable visit from the Leader of the Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, and the Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Amy Croft who joined them to celebrate a generous donation of new books.
The initiative, delivered in partnership with Business in the Community (BITC), is designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading and support literacy development. The book donation forms part of BITC’s Place Programme, which supports communities in need across the UK. Through a range of school partnerships, BITC works to improve literacy skills among school-age children while strengthening links between schools and local businesses.

Do you have a spare room?
The Council is currently recruiting new carers for the Shared Lives service. Shared Lives is an established nationwide programme that is transforming lives as an alternative to supported living or residential care. The scheme matches adults requiring support with approved paid carers in the local community.
Read more about how Shared Lives can transform lives from Andy Harvey, Hounslow’s Registered Manager for the service, who has over 30 years of experience matching carers with service users.

It pays to be direct
Unlike the NHS, Social Care is not free at the point of use. Currently, the threshold for residents to contribute to their own care is set at £23,250 (in personal capital) by the Government.
The most efficient way of paying care contributions is by direct debit. It offers a convenient, flexible, secure system and a better user experience.
Direct debit also helps ensure continued high-quality provision of adult social care and can work for all individual packages.
