Your January Clean and Green update

Welcome to the first edition of the Clean and Green update for 2026. This month, we're sharing ways to get involved, including helping the Council shape plans so the borough is more resilient to extreme weather and volunteering in our beautiful green spaces. 

You can also learn about the impact of wood burning and find out how we're working with councils across the UK to tackle climate change.

Funding for innovative heat network

Isleworth and Brentford are set for a major upgrade as the Council recently secured £10.5m of funding from the Green Heat Network Fund.

Construction is expected to begin in 2028 on the area's new heat network that will extract waste heat from the Mogden Sewage Treatment works in order to provide around 50GWh of heat per year to 30 buildings in the local area.

Hounslow Council is developing a new Climate Change Resilience Plan, and we’re inviting residents to contribute their insight at a public workshop on Thursday 29 January from 6-8pm at Hounslow House.

The session will explore climate risks from flooding and heatwaves to storms and wildfires, and identify practical measures to strengthen community preparedness, infrastructure, green spaces and local services.

The draft plan will be posted on Let's Talk Hounslow for residents to give feedback - look out for it in the coming months.

This month, Hounslow Council joined UK100, a network of councils across the UK bringing together politicians from across the political spectrum to tackle climate change. 

UK100 champions best practice, innovation and knowledge-sharing, enabling local leaders to overcome shared challenges and advocate for green policies at a national level.

Know the facts about air pollution

To mark Clean Air Night on 22 January, we shared some little-known facts about the environmental and health impact of heating your home by burning wood.

Wood burning produces fine particulate air pollution, which can cause heart and lung disease and increase the risk of diabetes and dementia.

If people in the UK only burned wood when no other heat source is available, we could avoid more than 1,500 death every year.

Volunteer with us in Hounslow's parks

Looking to get out in the fresh air, meet new people and learn new skills? Why not try out volunteering in parks across the Borough? 

Our volunteers help rangers with tasks from carrying out wildlife surveys to coppicing, tree planting and litter picking.

Transforming Bedfont Pitts

You told us what needed attention at Bedfont Pitts, and we've taken action. Following walkabouts and a review of resident feedback, we carried out a three-day clean-up to tackle the issues you flagged, removing fly-tipped waste, clearing overgrown vegetation, reopening paths and installing clear signage.

School children decorate new sweeper vehicles 

Last week, Hounslow Highways welcomed students from Spring Grove Primary School to their depot for the official unveiling of the Borough's two newest cleansing sweepers.

Children from the school took part in a competition to have their artwork featured on the new vehicles - keep an eye out for the colourful designs coming to a street near you! (Photo credit: Hounslow Highways)
