Giving back to the community
Save lives by giving blood
Next week is National Blood Week (9-15 June). The NHS is using the week as a springboard to meet its goal of one million regular blood donors in England.
Why not register as a donor today so you can make your first appointment to donate during the week itself?
Currently 2% of the population supply all the blood for NHS patients. Last year just under 800,000 people donated and blood stocks are low. If a million people gave blood regularly, the national blood stock would be closer to meeting the demand for life-saving treatments.

Bowling Balls 2025
Bowling Balls is returning to Holy Trinity Church, Hounslow on Tuesday, 24 June, 11am - 1pm. The event is aimed at raising awareness for men's health and tackling cancer head-on. It will cover prostate cancer, testicular cancer and bowel cancer, including signs and symptoms, screening information and who to talk to for advice.
Hounslow's Health Outreach Team will be there on the day offering their usual advice and health checks for all residents.
Bowling Balls is designed specifically for men with learning disabilities and neurodiversity as well as their caregivers. There is no need to book in advance, you can just turn up on the day.
Get 30 hours of childcare
From this September, 15 hours childcare for working families with children under three will expand to 30 hours. This means eligible working families can now apply for 30 hours of childcare from the term after their child turns 9 months until they reach school age.
This expansion is designed to support your child’s early education and help you better balance work and family life. It’s the final phase of the childcare expansion, which could save families up to £7,500 per year. Apply for your childcare code by Sunday, 31 August to start using the support from September.
Already using 15 hours childcare for working families? You don’t need to reapply for a new code. Simply continue to reconfirm your details every three months on your GOV.UK account and your existing code will update automatically to enable you to take up 30 hours from September.
Helping every child succeed in school
L-R - Council staff, Cllr Aysha Tariq and Jasmeen Chana (Headteacher, Cranford Primary)
Scrutiny is how local councillors check that public services are working well. It involves asking questions, looking at the evidence, and suggesting improvements.
In Hounslow, the Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Panel, chaired by Cllr Emma Siddhu, recently examined how primary schools are helping children who may be at a disadvantage - especially those who get free school meals.
The panel was concerned about a clear pattern: children eligible for free school meals often miss more school and find it harder to keep up in reading, writing and maths. Even a few extra days of absence can make a big difference to how well children do at school.
Council tenants take the lead
Last week, the Council hosted a fantastic event to spotlight Residents Voice – a group of dedicated tenants working to make real change.
Residents Voice are your neighbours, your peers – and they are holding housing services to account, making sure tenant voices are genuinely listened to and reflected in every decision that affects them.
It was an inspiring afternoon of connection between tenants and housing staff, all focused on how tenant-led scrutiny can lead to better services and stronger communities. To find out more or get involved, email engage@hounslow.gov.uk.
