This year's Dementia Action Week (19- 25 May) is packed with fun and informative activities to raise awareness of dementia and help those with the illness and their carers to relax, including free exercise sessions, walks and more. The full list of events can be found here.
The main event is Living Well with Dementia, co-hosted by the Alzheimer's Society and the Council at Syon House on Tuesday, 20 May. There will be information on the services and support available in Hounslow for anyone affected, including expert talks and interactive workshops.
Places are free but please confirm your attendance using the link below.
Anyone in Hounslow aged between 55 and 74 who smokes or used to smoke can get a free lung cancer screening.
It's the best way to detect lung cancer early when it's treatable, even before any symptoms appear. The process is non-intrusive and you will only be sent for a full CT scan if you are deemed to be at higher risk.
Hounslow’s Bereavement and End of Life Support Service, delivered by The Mulberry Centre, is hosting an event for Dying Matters Awareness Week called Life, Death and Chocolate Cake tomorrow (Wednesday, 7 May), 2.30pm to 4pm.
The aim is to increase awareness of death, with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.
To book your place email talk@themulberrycentre.co.uk or call 020 8321 6300.
The Council is hosting a free event at Hounslow House on Wednesday, 21 May for residents in the borough who are blind or experiencing sight loss.
Along with Council teams, the fair will include representatives from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), Middlesex Association for the Blind, Guide Dogs, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and many more.
Starting from Monday, 12 May, Stay Steady and Active will offer seven weekly classes designed for those aged 60 and over. The classes available include:
- Otago strength and balance
- Bollyfusion
- Tai Chi
- Supported EGYM sessions
Engaging in physical activity offers numerous benefits for individuals over 60, such as enhancing bone health and strength. This helps to lower the risk of injuries and fractures from falls.
It also helps to maintain independent living, preventing age-related declines in strength, balance, and coordination, while providing an excellent opportunity for social interaction.
