![NHS 111](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2025/01/10819707/nhs-111_original.jpg) If you or a family member has a cold or flu, get well at home and help prevent the spread to others.
If you need help or advice with your symptoms, NHS 111 can assess and direct you to the right place for you. Call 111, go online via 111.nhs.uk, or use the NHS App.
More advice on staying well this winter can be found on the NHS website.
The best way to protect yourself against flu is by taking the flu vaccination. Make an apointment with your GP or find a pharmacy below that is administering free vaccinations.
![Cervical screening](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2025/01/10853320/5938477/502144-ohid-cervicalscreening-dsceen-landscape-mobi_crop.jpg) In 2023, the NHS pledged to eliminate cervical cancer in England by 2040. With one week to go until Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (21-28 January), here’s how you can do your bit.
Parents and carers of children in Year 8 are encouraged to ensure their child has received the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination through their school.
The vaccine provides protection against HPV infection, which is responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer. Anyone who did not get vaccinated through their school can still get the HPV vaccine through their GP until the age of 25.
Alongside vaccination, attending your cervical cancer screening appointment is one of the best ways to help prevent cervical cancer. All women aged 25 to 64 are invited by letter to cervical screening to check the health of their cervix.
It’s important to attend your screening appointment even if you’re vaccinated, as the HPV vaccine protects against most types of HPV that causes cervical cancer but not all.
Make sure you're also aware of the symptoms of cervical cancer. These are common symptoms that can be caused by other conditions, but it’s important to get them checked by a GP if you’re experiencing any of them.

![healthy teeth](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2025/01/10844635/5938499/fluoride-varnish_crop.jpg) If your child is a pupil in reception, year 1 or 2 at an eligible school for the 2024-2025 scheme, you should have been contacted by the school and received a consent form for their fluoride varnishing.
Please do ensure you complete the form, so your child does not miss out on this valuable opportunity to keep their teeth strong and healthy.
Evidence has shown that applying fluoride varnish onto children’s teeth can help reduce tooth decay, especially if accompanied by good tooth brushing habits and a diet low in sugar.
Tooth decay is the main cause for hospital admissions for children in Hounslow. It can cause pain, as well as difficulties eating, speaking, socialising and sleeping, and can lead to school absence.
