Volunteering
Countdown to Volunteers Week 2024

|
Volunteers' Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK.
Volunteers’ Week was first established in 1984, by what was then known as Volunteering England.
This year will be celebrating the 40th anniversary, from Monday, 3 June to Sunday, 9 June.
It is a chance to recognise, celebrate and thank the incredible volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole.
As well as helping others, volunteering has been shown to improve volunteers' wellbeing too.
It is human nature to feel good after helping someone out. Volunteering can also help young people gain valuable new skills and experiences and boost their confidence and is a great way to impress potential employers.
- An estimated 14.2m people in the UK volunteered through a group, club, or organisation in 2021/22.
- Almost one in five (16%) people report volunteering at least once a month (about 8.3m people in the UK).
- More than half of the UK population gets involved in informal volunteering – but this is less visible. Informal volunteering can involve things like going shopping, providing childcare or doing housework for free for someone who is not a relative or a friend.
This year Volunteers’ Week will culminate in The Big Help Out, from Friday, 7 June to Sunday, 9 June, where people across the UK will get the chance to experience a range of volunteer taster sessions.

If you are working with young people who want to do some volunteering locally the best place to start is with The Ealing and Hounslow Volunteer Centre.
This amazing organisation is commissioned by the Council to be the official Volunteer Centre for the London Borough of Hounslow and we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and show our appreciation to them and all volunteers in the lead up to Volunteer Week 2024.
Their job is to:
- Help people who live, work or study in Hounslow to become volunteers
- Develop a wide range of good volunteering opportunities and match people with the opportunities that best suits them
- Provide specialist support for anyone with disabilities or long-term health conditions who wants to become a volunteer
- Help voluntary organisations and local businesses to find the volunteers that they need
Whether they are just starting their volunteering journey, or are a volunteering veteran, The Ealing & Hounslow Volunteer Centre is there to help.

City Year UK Mentoring Opportunity

|
City Year UK is a youth and education charity which empowers 18 to 25-year-olds, from all backgrounds, to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time volunteering in schools.
Volunteers are at the heart of City Year UK. Throughout the academic year, they spend four days a week helping pupils succeed in school, while the fifth is dedicated to their own personal and professional development.
Whether they’re in a primary or secondary school, City Year Mentors sit alongside pupils who are struggling. They help develop key skills - emotional, social, and academic - but City Year's not just about being in a classroom. City Year Mentors welcome pupils at the gate, are extra 'eyes and ears' in the playground and run extra-curricular clubs.
What young people will get:
- On the fifth day young people will work towards the Leadership and Development Programme with a completion certificate, accredited training qualifications, and a professional reference.
- Get expenses covered while doing what you love: £115-£125 per week, plus all travel expenses reimbursed
- 93% of mentors land incredible jobs or education opportunities after their year of service. Could you be one of them too?
An ideal Gap Year or volunteering opportunity.
Eligibility
- Aged 18 - 25
- Available full-time, Monday to Friday, during school term time when they start (Part time mentors must be available 3 days per week; 2 days in school, and every Friday on their Leadership Programme)
