Join an inspiring event and explore ways to improve women's health
![Women's health event 22 May](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2024/04/9402831/beige-illustrated-international-women-39-s-day-gree_original.png) Ahead of International Day of Action for Women's Health, there will be an event at Holy Trinity Church, Hounslow on Wednesday, 22 May to highlight the health challenges women face and how to tackle them.
The discussions and feedback from the day will be used by members of the Borough Based Partnership to help shape the first Hounslow Women’s Health Strategy, which will empower women across the borough and beyond to improve their health services.
There will also be inspiring female experts on the day talking about several key areas of women's health, as well as a light lunch with networking opportunities. It's a great chance for women to get their voice heard and work together towards better health.
Explore Hounslow's green spaces during National Walking Month

National Walking Month runs from 1 to 31 May. To help you make the most of the month and enjoy nature while getting your steps in, Healthy Hounslow has put together a series of great walks through some of the most attractive parts of the borough.
They're all free, but you will need to register in advance so the organisers have an idea of numbers before setting off.
It's a great way to improve your wellbeing, meet new people, and explore some of the many fantastic green spaces Hounslow has to offer.

Dementia Action Week: several events for people affected by the illness
![Dementia Action Week](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2024/04/9403432/5418480/daw-24-1_crop.jpg) Dementia Action Week (DAW) takes place from 13 to 19 May this year and there will be a range of free events and activities across Hounslow throughout the week.

Kicking off the week on Monday, 13 May, The Alzheimer's Society is hosting as event for anyone affected by dementia at Syon House.
The event, run in partnership with the Council, will offer information, support, and inspiration for anyone affected by dementia - including family members and carers.
Grants available to improve health and wellbeing in Hounslow
![Thriving communities grants](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2024/04/9383631/5418481/thriving-communities-grants_crop.jpeg) The Council has now opened applications for the Thriving Communities Fund Small Grants. These provide funding of up to £1,000 for projects that bring communities together and improve their health and wellbeing.
Applications are encouraged from community and voluntary sector organisations and informal groups, including residents and neighbours' groups like the Polish Klan’s women-only exercise class (pictured).
Applications for the fund are accepted on a rolling basis. Funding decisions are usually communicated within four weeks.
Enjoy a brush with greatness during National Smile Month
![National Smile Month](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2024/04/9402540/5418482/smile-month_crop.jpg) Monday, 13 May marks the start of National Smile Month, an initiative by the Oral Health Foundation to raise awareness of important oral health issues.
This year’s theme is Love Your Smile. As one of your best assets a smile can brighten up a room, so it's important to give it the best care possible.
There is a range of fun activity packs available for your family that you can use to improve your oral health together over the coming month.
You can also find out how to make healthy swaps that reduce your sugar intake using the NHS Food Scanner app.
Free courses for unpaid carers with Transit Community Support
Transit Community Support delivers free courses for unpaid carers on the second and fourth Friday of each month, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
The courses coming up in the next few months are:
- 10 May - Nutrition & Hydration
- 31 May - Food Safety & Hygiene
- 14 June - Safeguarding
Digital support sessions are also available every Friday to help navigate online systems, access support and use applications safely.
The sessions also provide a safe space for carers to share their individual experiences and enable peer-to-peer support and learning, as well as giving inspiration to each other.

Celebrating Black Men in Hounslow
![Celebrating black men Hounslow](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2024/04/9352910/5401410/black-men-event-april24_crop.jpg) Hounslow Council, in collaboration with the Ghanaian Community Forum, is hosting an event for black men of all ages at Brentford’s Musical Museum on Saturday, 18 May.
The event will have a marketplace format and will feature a mix of Council teams and local community groups and charities, including Prostate Cancer UK. Black men are more likely to suffer with Prostate Cancer than any other ethnic group.
It’s also an opportunity to enjoy steel pan music, performed live by the Steel Pan Trust, and a selection of complimentary Caribbean food and refreshments.
COVID-19 spring vaccinations available now

The booking system for vaccinations has now re-opened and you can book an appointment if you are over 75 or have a weakened immune system.
You can book the vaccine through the NHS App or on the NHS website, which also lists walk-in sites across the country. For a full list of where you can get the vaccine in Hounslow, please head to the relevant pages on the NW London NHS website.

HOT is a community-based health team that provides information on local health and wellbeing services to residents on a range of popular health topics, including blood pressure checks, Body Mass Index (BMI) healthy weight checks, and checks on your carbon monoxide levels. The team can also signpost residents to support with diabetes, mental health issues and more.
In the next week you can meet the team on the following dates:

- 3 May - Brentford Community Hub, Brentford Library, Boston Manor Rd, TW8 8DW - 10am to 2pm

Courses for adults to help with health and wellbeing

These range from fitness to stress management and plenty in-between.
Many courses take place in the evening, so they’re perfect for residents who work during the day. While some courses require a small fee, residents may be able to take the classes for free if claiming benefits or on a low income.

Sight loss confidence-building workshop
![Sightloss workshop](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2024/04/9323367/5387838/sightloss-workshop_crop.jpg) On Wednesday, 8 May, Eye Matter is hosting a confidence building afternoon for people who are experiencing sight loss, in partnership with Hounslow Council, RNIB, and The Middlesex Association for the Blind.
There will be acting sessions, games, and creative exercises aimed at helping people who are experiencing sight loss to build confidence and make friends and connections.
The day will begin with a meet-and-greet at Feltham Station at 1.40pm, where attendees will be escorted to Feltham Assembly Hall. The day will run until 5.00pm.
