What is An Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.
As an apprentice young people will:
- be an employee
- work alongside experienced staff
- gain job-specific skills
- get time for training and study related to your role (at least 20% of your normal working hours)
Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level.

Who can start an apprenticeship
To start an apprenticeship you must be:
- 16 or over
- living in England
- not in full-time education
Young people can apply for an apprenticeship while they are still at school but they need to be 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays to start the apprenticeship.
Those who have relevant experience could spend less time training or qualify earlier This includes having:
- qualifications, such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in a relevant subject
- industry or sector experience
- completed training, such as an IT course
They can agree this with their training provider and employer when they start their apprenticeship.

Are you an London Borough of Hounslow manager who wants to know how to successfully recruit young people into your team using apprenticeships?

Are you interested in mentoring or becoming a buddy for one of our young apprentices?
To mark National Apprenticeship Week (#NAW24) this year, the OD team is hosting an internal event on February 7th to promote the use of apprenticeships in the organisation.
Managers and staff are invited to go along to our listen to talks and presentations including the launch of a mentoring/buddy training programme: , Drop in at any time throughout the day (10am-4pm), or attend one of our special presentations below:
- 10.30am-11.15am: how we can use apprenticeships to fill skill gaps
- 12pm-12.45pm: apprenticeships and disabilities
- 1pm - 1.45pm: recruiting and supporting apprentices
- 2pm-2.45pm: workwise mentoring programme
The marketplace and sessions will all be held on the second-floor collaboration area.

Support young people to embark on an exciting and welcoming journey into the world of Heathrow careers with this half-day workshop!
These immersive half-day workshops are their gateway to discovering the remarkable world of Heathrow. Where they will gain invaluable insights into:
- The rich history and layout of Heathrow, unveiling the story behind the airport.
- The job roles currently available, providing them with a glimpse into the exciting opportunities awaiting them.
- The essential skills and behaviours required to thrive in various roles, empowering them to reach their full potential.
- The application process and the support available to guide them through their career journey.
When attending the workshop, they will have the opportunity to explore the Skills Builder Framework. This framework encompasses a wide range of essential skills, including speaking, listening, aiming-high, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, staying positive and leadership. It helps you gain a clear understanding of these skills and their importance in different aspects of their professional and personal life.
How Will Young People Benefit?
- By the end of the workshop, young people will possess all the necessary tools and knowledge to confidently submit their application and become part of the remarkable team that contributes to delivering the world's best airport service.

Transport For London Apprenticeship Fair
Transport for London (TfL) are pleased to announce their 2024 Annual Apprenticeship fair!
Open to all ages and abilities, it is an opportunity for our young people to discover their route into an exciting new career and a fantastic opportunity to discover the breadth of exciting careers within the transportation, engineering, and construction sectors as well as those in the Greater London Authority and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
There will be over 20 employers and partners offering apprenticeships in a variety of areas as well as entry level roles and pre-employment training opportunities.
This is an in-person event with a morning and afternoon slot. You can select your time slot during registration.

Teachers Join BBC Bitesize for NAW 2024
Join BBC Bitesize us on Monday 5 February for a week of apprenticeship themed daily activities, lesson starters including 10-minute classroom activities for secondary schools and learners aged 11 to 16 and video content to get your students thinking about future careers and the right path for them.
They will have themed days from Monday-Friday during NAW. There is a pre-planned activity for each day as outlined in this activity guide, ready to use in your classroom. Simply follow the steps below to join in during the week. If that’s not possible, the content will remain online and available for you to flexibly at any time.

K10 are the UK’s largest construction-specific Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency. Founded in 2009, we are an award-winning social enterprise with a passion to convert potential.
Their aim is to place our learners in sustainable employment on projects in their local area. To do this, we collaborate with government, referral organisations, local authorities, developers, contractors, and colleges, to deliver apprenticeship programmes specifically designed to upskill the future of construction.
Eligibility
To start an apprenticeship with K10, candidates will need to be:
- living in the UK for the last 3years and have the Right to Work status
- not enrolled on any other courses
- 18+ due to site Health & Safety rules
K10 Business Administration Apprenticeship – Heathrow, Hounslow
Qualifications Minimum Requirements
English and Maths at GCSE Grade 3 or above, or Functional Skills at Level 1 or above.
Desired Requirements
It will be an advantage if the candidate has some previous related work experience, and they should be confident using ICT and Microsoft Office.
Key Training/College Information
K10 will enrol candidate to the Level 3 Business Administration course and fund their qualifications through an accredited training provider.
The apprenticeship duration is 18 - 21 months.
Salary: Up to £350 - £400 p/w

K10 Carpentry Apprenticeship - Hounslow
Working week: work on site for 4 days per week & attend college for 1 day a week. Most site hours are Monday to Friday, 8.00am-5.00pm
NOTE: Apprenticeship is likely to take 12-24 months to complete, depending on current qualifications and experience. K10 will enrol and fund qualifications through a SFA funded training provider.
Qualifications: must have at least Entry Level 3 in Functional Skills or GCSE grade D or above in Maths & English
To become a carpenter, the candidate will need to have reasonable maths skills for measuring and working out angles and will need to follow technical drawings and plans.
Desirable: passion and commitment to become a fully qualified carpenter. It would be advantageous if candidate has completed technical certificates in carpentry or multi-skills. Has previous related work experience, CSCS and/or PASMA, but this is not essential.
Salary: up to £350 per week
K10 Plumbing Apprenticeship - Hounslow
Minimum Requirements
English and Maths at GCSE Grade 3 or above, or Functional Skills at Level 1 or above.
Candidate must have completed a Level 2 Plumbing Studies Diploma
NOTE: Apprenticeship duration is 48 months dependant on candidate’s previous qualifications.
Salary: up to £350 per week

Level 2 Warehouse & Sales Apprenticeship
As a Warehouse and Sales Apprentice, young people will be working in all aspects of the business from stock control, customer service and sales. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to start their career in the Electrical Wholesale sector.
As an apprentice they will complete a Warehouse Level 2 qualification with a national Training Provider. Training is completed in the workplace, and they will be allocated a tutor and a study session in their working week.
Desired skills and personal qualities
Communication skills, IT skills, Attention to detail, Organisation skills, Customer care skills, Problem solving skills, administrative skills, Number skills, Analytical skills, Logical, Team working, Initiative, Physical fitness (Some heaving lifting may be involved)

In Celebration of T Level Thursday
T Levels are two-year courses which are taken after GCSEs and are broadly equivalent in size to 3 A Levels. Launched in September 2020, these courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and education providers so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for entry into skilled employment, an apprenticeship or related technical study through further or higher education.
T Levels offer students practical and knowledge-based learning at a school or college and on-the-job experience through an industry placement of at least 315 hours – approximately 45 days.
