Opportunities for Young People in Education
Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Work Experience and Observerships
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) does not currently offer a centralised work experience programme. However, there are many responsible clinicians and staff in senior posts who would be willing to support a few placements per year including:
Anaesthetics and Surgery Work Placements
The Trust offers both work experience in Anaesthetics and Surgery for those interested in applying to medical school. In order to be considered young people need to submit their CV with their work experience application form. The CV must include evidence of the A Levels they are studying. These placements usually take place during the school holidays.
In addition to this, the team can also offer clinical observer placements – the application form can be found by clicking on the button below. Once completed please return it to kirtipopat@nhs.net, Anaesthetic Co-ordinator.
Therapies work placements
The Therapies Department runs a combined Allied Health Professions (AHP) work experience programme. This may include spending time shadowing Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians, Speech and Language Therapists, Orthotists, and Prosthetists, subject to availability. Due to high demand, this programme is only open to students looking to study one of these AHP professions.
To apply for this programme, complete the Work Experience application form and email it to rnoh.therapies.workexperience@nhs.net.
For Spinal and PNI (physical and neurological impairment) placements. Please contact Sandra Moore, Spinal & PNI service manager Sandra.moore1@nhs.net for further details
To ensure fair opportunity and to manage demand for placements, work experience placements are 1 to 5 days in duration. (There can be some flexibility around this dependent on your sponsor's availability, i.e. 1 day per week over several weeks)
- Students cannot be hosted in an area where a family member or close friend is working
- Students must be aged 16 – 18 years old and have the permission of their parent or guardian.
- Students cannot be placed in high-risk areas such as ICU, Paediatrics wards, and Estates. Not all areas will be able to accept requests.
- Students cannot be placed out of hours, weekends, or bank holidays.
- Students are permitted one placement only.
RNOH encourage applicants to give at least 8 weeks' notice, especially in times of high demand such as school holidays
If you have any further queries please email: rnoh.workexperience@nhs.net

Observerships – Over 18’s only
An observership is an educational experience (longer than a day but no longer than 2 weeks) restricted to watching and listening during patient histories, physical examinations, procedures, outpatient appointments, teaching rounds, and educational conferences - therefore observation only.
Observer placements provide applicants with the opportunity to work alongside RNOH clinicians.
To request an observer placement please complete the application which can be found on the RNOH website by clicking on the button below

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2023
Hounslow Council invites you to join us to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Feltham Assembly Hall on 4 December 2023, 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.
The theme this year is “Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Fuelling an Accessible and Fair World.”
Our keynote speaker will be addressing this year’s theme, urging us to find solutions by modifying the already available resources and searching for equal opportunities for those with disabilities, to pave the way for their effective inclusion. The event will consider the transformations needed for disability-inclusive development in sports, entertainment, media, education, and employment. The round table discussion aims to explore good practical tools to reduce inequality for disabled people in all sectors. There will be many opportunities for the young people to engage with disability-confident employers during our lunch and learn, explore job opportunities, and also engage with sporting institutions and other organisations on the day.
The day will include an opening from the co-chairs of our Disability and Age Equality Network to provide context to the day. This will be followed by a keynote speaker, a panel discussion and an engaging feedback and reflection session from the audience. There will be a ‘Lunch and Learn’ session at the end of the event with the opportunity to network and explore live vacancies from disability confident employers, sporting programmes and other exciting initiatives!
We want to see and hear from an array of residents, stakeholders, and young people from Hounslow.
