Hounslow celebrates residents’ recycling habits amid National Recycle Week
Hounslow Council is on a mission to get more residents recycling, and much more often.
Whether you live in Hounslow or run a business in the borough, your recycling plays a pivotal part in reducing our carbon footprint city-wide, and brings us closer to our target of net zero carbon by 2030.
Promisingly, Hounslow residents already show a real appetite for ensuring waste can be revitalised and turned into something new. But there’s more work to be done.
Improving recycling rates is a key priority for Hounslow. We want to achieve a 37% recycling rate by the end of the financial year 2022/23, and we need your help to do it.
We are encouraging all residents to learn more about the many benefits of recycling, and how it positively impacts our planet.
Net Zero Investment Summit 2022: road to net zero
Hounslow’s Chief Executive, Niall Bolger and Deputy Leader, Katherine Dunne will be attending the Net Zero Investment Summit in Guildhall, London next week.
Hounslow will be strongly represented as the Council, alongside 3Ci partners, calls on central government to provide the appropriate funding to allow the borough to accelerate to net zero, and deliver a scalable Low Carbon Neighbourhoods programme.
The Council has already laid out plans to reach net zero carbon by 2030 in its Climate Emergency Action Plan, with a further target of a 50% emissions reduction by 2026. All zero carbon ambitions are underpinned by Hounslow’s Green Economy Action Plan, which focuses on doubling the number of green training and employment opportunities across London.
If you’d like to hear from a leading line-up of speakers, including Niall, regarding the opportunities that net zero projects can present, free tickets are available.
The event begins from 08:30am and follows through to 7:30pm, on Tuesday, 25 October.
Apply on time for secondary school transfer places
Parents and carers with children in Year 6 and born between 1 September, 2011 and 31 August 2012, can apply to transfer to secondary school in September, 2023.
The easy online application process allows families to choose six secondary schools. Families are encouraged to take their time exploring the range of options available. However, to avoid disappointment, it is vital not to miss the application deadline.
Applications must be submitted by Monday, 31 October 2022.
Any applications received after the deadlines will be considered late, and late applications will only be processed after ‘on time’ applications. Missing the deadline increases the risk of not being offered a place at a preferred school – even if the child already has a sibling there.
The Schools Admissions Team will be able to offer advice and assistance by phone, on 020 8583 2721/2711 or by email admissions@hounslow.gov.uk.
Eco-friendly cleaning for Hounslow’s estates
We are always looking at ways to improve our services and residents lives, which is why we have added four new Glutton H2O cleaning machines to our estate management fleet.
These electric, environmentally friendly machines combine multiple street cleaning tools into one, and can clean and clear difficult areas such as pathways, ball courts, playgrounds, and other hard-to-reach places more efficiently and effectively than previous methods. The on-board washer enables the Council’s Caretakers to remove small quantities of graffiti and cleanse the surfaces of litter bins, bin shelters and bin rooms.
The machines will be based on the larger estates, Ivybridge, Brentford Towers, Heston Farm and Highfields, but when required can be transported across the borough to service other estates.

Small grants for festive season events
Community event organisers across the borough can apply to receive funding from the Council in a bid to bring life, community, and fun back to Hounslow’s public spaces this festive season. The events will aim to celebrate the boroughs unique towns and neighbourhoods, and showcase our incredible range independent businesses, encouraging people to explore the local offer.
The Council has a small £15,000 fund, which will be distributed to multiple event activities taking place across the borough before April 1st 2023. Individuals, who can provide evidence of local support for their event, can apply for up to £1,000. Charities, community groups, and voluntary organisations, who meet the eligibility criteria, can apply for larger grants of over £1,000.
The funding can be used for:
- New events or expanding existing events.
- Those involving or engaging a wide section of the community.

Screening saves lives
October is breast cancer awareness month and the NHS is urging anyone who has been invited to attend their breast screening appointment - this includes anyone aged 50 -71 who is registered with their GP as female.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and finding it early can make it more treatable. If you notice any of the symptoms of breast cancer it is important you contact your GP. It may be nothing serious, but it is always best to check with a health professional.
Hounslow's over 50s get a boost
Hounslow residents who are aged 50 and over are being invited to book their COVID-19 autumn booster and flu vaccination.
NHS England has invited more than 12 million people in this age group nationally to book their booster to protect themselves, their families and the NHS this winter.
There is evidence that people who contract COVID-19 and flu at the same time are more likely to become seriously ill.
Health officials in Hounslow are urging residents to get their COVID-19 booster because immunity to the infection appears to reduce over time.
The borough's over 50s join a list of groups of people eligible for both vaccines. It also includes care workers, frontline health staff and people with weakend immune systems.
Find out more about who is eligible, where to get vaccinated and how to book your COVID-19 and flu boosters by clicking the button below.
Council tenants, is your home covered?
Hounslow Council does not cover your home contents as part of the tenancy agreement. It’s a good idea to consider what a home contents insurance policy would cover you for in order to help you make an informed decision on whether you need one.
Contents insurance is designed to help protect your possessions. No matter how careful you are, there’s always a risk that your belongings could be broken, damaged or stolen so home contents insurance can help provide peace of mind should the worst happen.
We have teamed up with Thistle Tenant Risks who provide specialist pay as you go Tenants Contents Insurance policies, and all tenants living in social and affordable housing are eligible to apply. The scheme can offer you insurance for the contents of your home including cover for items such as furniture, carpets, curtains, clothes, bedding, electrical items, jewellery, pictures and ornaments.
If you're unsure whether this insurance policy is right for you, please contact us on 020 8583 2347 or email us at risk.insurance@hounslow.gov.uk.
