Back to nature at Northcote Nature Reserve
Plans to create a stunning new nature reserve on an old and long-neglected recreation ground are taking shape.
Construction work began on the environmental improvements at the Northcote Nature Reserve in February and is expected to be completed this month. The nature reserve will however not be fully open to the public until Summer 2023 to ensure that the new habitats and wildlife have a little bit of space to establish.
The idea is to transform the former recreational ground, known locally as the ‘Pit Park’, into a nature reserve and wildlife sanctuary.
The project vision was born from the Friends of Northcote Nature Reserve, who were instrumental in the design and stakeholder engagement on the project. Hounslow Council is now working to create a green oasis on this site for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Feeding a green future for Hounslow through food waste recycling
![waste and recycling](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/UKHOUNSLOW/2020/03/3246720/4314022/photo-2020-03-24-08-32-11-1_crop.jpg) A project aimed at increasing food waste recycling rates in Hounslow is proving to have all the ingredients for success.
In early 2020, Hounslow Council set an ambitious target to provide a food-waste collection service to 24,000 flats by the end of 2022. As of 22, August, the service had provided for 16,794 households across 137 sites, and is now on track to exceed this target.
The Council’s recycling team and its partners have engaged with residents throughout the project and communicated the aims and objectives.
The residents have been active partners in the programme, giving feedback and suggestions which have been taken on board to improve the service throughout the roll out.
Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Operational Services, Councillor Guy Lambert, said: “It is clear that there is an appetite amongst our residents to recycle more food waste than ever before. That is why we have listened to what they have had to say. We have understood the barriers they face in recycling their food waste and made every effort to remove them. This is why we have introduced innovations such as the bin washing service, which have been so successful.”

Eco Festival sees nature fighting back against the machine! Sunday 9 October @ London Museum of Water and Steam, Brentford.
Since the industrial revolution began, in the 19th Century, the rise of the machine has led human beings to release extra carbon dioxide and accelerate global warming as well as allowing them to use up earth’s natural resources faster than they can grow back! Experience the “Industrial Revelation”, a day long eco-festival with special evening rock concert! Inside the normally sterile museum's shell, among the huge and impressive steam machines, some curious, organic, wooden sculptures have been appearing, as if trying to reclaim the territory on behalf of Mother Earth!
During the Day
Visitors to the event will not only be able to learn about the rise of these incredible machines and enjoy the museum's lovely café, but they'll also be able to take part in extra activities including “Find the Artyfacts” Sculpture Trail, “Take Part In Art” workshop, and local environmental activities.
