Five things you didn’t know about the new Cabinet Member for Parking, Parks and Leisure
Councillor Salman Shaheen was recently appointed Cabinet Member for Parking, Parks and Leisure at Hounslow Council. He was elected a councillor in 2018 and represents the Isleworth ward.
I studied Social & Political Sciences at Cambridge and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. I am a writer and have written for the Guardian, New Statesmen and Times of India. I am currently working on a sci-fi novel.
I fell in love with Hounslow after having a pint along Isleworth riverside at the Town Wharf pub. Although I was born in Norwich, and have lived in various parts of London, I called Hounslow my home in 2014. Having a pint at the Town Wharf pub - overlooking the River Thames - made me realise how beautiful the area was!
My favourite thing about Hounslow is its diverse communities. Growing up in Suffolk, I was the only child in my class from an ethnic minority background. Coming to Hounslow was very enriching – surrounded by the diversity of cultures, languages and religions.
In my new role, I want to expand allotment provision in the borough. Growing up in the countryside, I had my own vegetable patch in my parents’ garden, and this helped ignite my passion for food and cooking. I want every resident in the borough to have the opportunity to grow fruit and vegetables on land they maintain – I also want to develop children’s interest in nature and understanding where food came from.
I like appearing on TV quiz shows. I am a fan of TV quiz shows and have appeared as a contestant on the Weakest Link and The Chase - I also like horse riding, travelling, cooking and music festivals.

The Council wants to make sure that everyone in our borough has equal access to opportunity, irrespective of where they live, their identity and background.
In order to do this we need your thoughts, ideas and opinions.
On Sunday, 7 August, a consultation event will be taking place at the Clayponds Estate Community Centre, Brentford, W5 4RQ, between noon and 4pm.
It will be a chance to meet and talk with Council representatives to determine how we can all work together to make Hounslow a fairer place.
There are more consultation events planned for the months ahead and the Council is also urging residents to complete an online survey and give their views.
