24 May 2022
It’s Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week and this year’s theme is #KnowYourRisk. Over 185,000 people in North West London are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and it is estimated that there are another 40,000 who are undiagnosed.
Type 2 diabetes can be a very serious health condition that can cause long-term health problems; it can lead to sight loss, kidney failure, loss of a limb, and makes you at least twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
Anyone can develop it, but certain factors can increase your risk, including family history, age, ethnicity and being overweight. You can prevent Type 2 diabetes by eating a healthy, balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping physically active. The following support is available in Hounslow:
- One You Hounslow is a friendly local service offering free support to lose weight, eat well and move more. Call 020 8973 3530 or visit www.oneyouhounslow.org for more information.
- The Know Diabetes Service is a local North West London digital health platform that promotes lifestyle, self-care and behaviour change messages to those at risk of Type 2 diabetes: www.knowdiabetes.org.uk/
-
The Healthier You service is available to those at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The service can support you to lose weight, get more physically active and improve your diet.
The first thing to do is find out if you are at risk.
