Welcome to the August edition of the Horsham Wellbeing Newsletter! As summer reaches its peak, we hope you're taking the time to enjoy the longer days and warmer weather.

We're excited to bring you a range of updates, tips, and resources to support your Health and Wellbeing.  

It's been more than a year!

Last month we celebrated our one year anniversary in our new location in Swan walk. In that year, we have more than 750 people for a 1:1 appointment, supported 56 people to successfully quit smoking, and delivered more than 300 NHS health checks in our new hub or in Workplaces.

Weight Off Workshops

Spaces are filling up quickly for our popular Weight off Workshops starting in September.

All groups will include private weekly weigh ins, toolbox, food diaries and weekly group workshops. Some groups will also include a gentle introduction to exercise.

We have courses running in CowfoldHorsham and Southwater.

If you're ready to stop the yo-yo dieting, get active and commit to making sustainable changes, we think you'll love WOW.

Get Active Courses this September

New to exercise but don't know where to start?

Our 10 week Get Active courses are a gentle introduction back into regular exercise. We have a range of beginner classes led by qualified instructors.

Pilates

Pilates focuses on balance, posture, strength and flexibility. It's suitable for people of all ages and like all of our Get Active courses is aimed at people who are taking their first steps to getting active.

Workplace Health

A proactive approach to health and wellbeing within the workplace is key to a happier and healthier workforce. Investment in staff health and wellbeing does not have to involve high costs; simple measures can make a big difference! What can we offer your workplace?

 

  • Individual staff Wellbeing MOTs and/or NHS Health Checks.
  • One-to-one support for any member of staff wishing to receive support to change a lifestyle behaviour (e.g. smoking, getting active and losing weight).
  • Referrals to our free in-house services such as weight management and getting active, see our Weight off workshops and Get active courses pages.
  • Return visits to a workplace to offer repeat Wellbeing MOTs so that staff can see if they have achieved improvements following intervention.
  • Workplace wellbeing days and events

Bowls

Learn to Bowl

The Horsham District Sports Development team are working in partnership with Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club to launch a brand new Learn to Bowl course. Running for ten weeks at the Indoor Bowls Club at Broadbridge Heath between Monday 23rd September and Monday 2nd December (excluding Monday 28th October), the sessions will take place from 12pm – 2pm and cost £40. The sessions are aimed at anyone that is interested in learning how to bowl, with instructors on hand to help you and all equipment provided. In your weekly two-hour session you will have the opportunity to learn and play bowls which will provide you with some gentle exercise. Halfway through there will be a break of about 30 minutes to have a tea or coffee, chat with the other participants and socialise with the instructors. At the end of the ten-week course, information will be provided for anyone wishing to join the club to enable them to continue playing. Love Parks 2024

Don't forget its Love Parks week between 29 July and 2 August. There are some great free activities taking place at various parks across the District.

We will also be at Bennetts Field Recreation ground on 2 August offering a FREE Learn to Run taster!

West Sussex Fire & Rescue - Safe and Well visit

A Safe and Well Visit is a free service carried out by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. They visit individuals and groups within our communities most in need. It involves a pre-arranged visit to your home to offer advice on how to make it safer and, where appropriate, fit smoke alarms or other specialist fire detection equipment free of charge.

Visits are tailored to the specific needs of the household - they normally last between 30-45 minutes. The fire service personnel who visit always carry identification.

Ride your bike to work day

Cycle to Work day is an annual event that encourages commuters to embrace cycling as their primary mode of transportation. The initiative aims to promote the numerous benefits of cycling, including physical and mental wellbeing, reducing your carbon footprint and saving on travel costs.

Dr Bike's 'Lean to Fix' classes teach you the essentials of bike maintenance so you can get the most out of your bike and feel confident in dealing with minor mechanical hiccups.

Talking therapies

20 August 10:30am - 1:30pm

 

Horsham residents can speak directly to staff from West Sussex Talking therapies at a bi-monthly information drop-in session at the Horsham Wellbeing Hub. The drop-ins aim to help you understand the services that NHS West Sussex Talking Therapies provide free to local residents so you can decide if it would be helpful for you or someone you know. Their friendly team will explain what talking therapies are, how they can benefit you, other support that is available and how to make a referral to the service.
