Getting the balance right
April is Stress Awareness Month which highlights the impact busy modern day living can have on our wellbeing. Keeping ourselves well is easier when we recognise our stresses and how to manage them. The most unhelpful thing you can do is turn to something unhealthy to help you cope. Take a look at some healthier ways to tackle stress suggested by the NHS.
If you feel it's time to prioritise your health, then get in touch to find out what support we can offer you to help improve your wellbeing. Whether you want an informal chat with a Wellbeing Advisor, a Wellbeing Check or you'd like to stop smoking or get moving, we might just have what you're looking for, and what's more, it's all completely free!

John originally contacted the service due to an issue he felt he had with gambling and because he wanted to stop smoking. At the first appointment he was advised to tackle one thing at a time, starting with the gambling. He was given options about where he could get support for this. Three months later he came back and was ready to stop smoking. His main motivation was to quit for his health but also because of the impact smoking was having on his finances.
After an initial appointment to make sure it was the right time for him to quit, John was supported by our advisor Lisa over the course of 12 weeks. This included deciding on the best Nicotine Replacement Therapy to use, setting a quit date, and discussing the challenges he might face along the way. We were absolutely delighted when John popped into the Wellbeing Hub last week to let us know it was a now a year since he quit. Congratulations John, what an achievement!
Here's what John had to say:
"My whole experience of Horsham Wellbeing has been amazing, and the advice and support was out of this world. I have never been so happy, my marriage is back on track and life is good. Lisa was absolutely brilliant helping me through the tough times of the first few weeks of giving up smoking and with her help I am physically and mentally strong. The service was first class."

Vicky
Pilates, LBT & 65+
Hi, I’m Vicky, I teach Pilates, aerobics and 65+. I’ve been working with the wellbeing team for seven years and have really enjoyed helping people on their fitness journey from nervous beginner to confident graduate. The classes I teach are inclusive and friendly, making everybody feel they can achieve their goals. I always say “it’s never a wrong move if you just keep it moving”. I like to think my classes are all about having fun while getting fitter and moving.
Heather
Legs, Bums & Tums
I'm Heather and I teach Legs, Bums and Tums. With over a decade of experience as an instructor, I'm passionate about guiding beginners to feel confident in their exercise journey.
The sessions start with a low-intensity aerobic module aimed at boosting your stamina and cardiovascular fitness. Then we move onto a body conditioning segment, where we focus on strengthening and toning, all done comfortably on mats on the floor.
You don't need any special equipment to take part in the classes, everything you require is provided. Just bring yourself and wear something comfy.
In our sessions, you're in control. You can choose your level and set your own pace. The key is to have fun and enjoy yourself while being active. I'm looking forward to welcoming you to one of our classes soon!

Chris
Parkfit 4 Beginners
Hi, I’m Chris, I teach ParkFit 4 Beginners. I like to build an inclusive, warm atmosphere that brings all participants together to support each other, whilst outside, exercising in nature’s gym!
Everyone is welcome, regardless of their starting point, size or worries.
There’s no military-style fitness here - just encouragement and support to achieve and beat your own goals, no one else’s.
Tess
Learn to Run
I'm Tess and I deliver the Learn to Run courses with our volunteer Nick. We've both been Leaders in Running Fitness since 2015 and really love watching people progress through the course.
We aren't a running group and you won't see us doing boring laps of the park, that's not what the course is about. It's about using different activities that involve a mixture of walking and jogging to get you moving.
During the early weeks there is more brisk walking than jogging and as the weeks go on, you know what feels right for you. We always say that this one hour a week is all yours and is your chance to think about you and no-one else.
We aim to give you the confidence to run in a friendly and supportive group, and it's a real bonus that we get to do this in the beautiful surroundings of Horsham Park!

We've partnered up with Bluecoats Sports Centre in Christ's Hospital to run an additional 65+ Back to Exercise course.
Our 65+ course is always fully booked with a waiting list so we were delighted when Bluecoats Sports Centre said they would like to host a course on our behalf.
This free 10-week aerobic and strength class is designed with the older body in mind. It’s a workout routine that has the power to help prevent injury and illness, keep you independent, alleviate stress and get you feeling strong and healthy.
Before you join, our friendly instructor Vicky (pictured above), will give you a call to find out a bit more about you and answer any questions you may have about the course.
