There are a few changes to our usual waste and recycling bin collection days over Christmas and New Year.

  • There will be no collections on the 26 and 27 December Bank holidays
  • Crews will be working some Saturdays to catch up
  • Garden waste collections will be suspended from 26 December until 9 January
  • Our crews will be redeployed to empty dog bins and litter bins throughout Christmas week

Check your bin collection calendar online to stay up to date.

Simple ways to save this Christmas

Simple ways to save this Christmas: wrapping paper

With Christmas fast approaching, here's how you can reduce waste and recycle more this year:

  • Do the scrunch test before you throw away any wrapping paper. If it scrunches, it can be recycled
  • Choose sweet treats with recyclable wrappers
  • Collect up soft plastic packaging and take it to a supermarket with a soft plastics recycling scheme. Sussex Green Living has published a list
  • You can recycle your single-use advent calendar in your blue-top bin as long as you separate the foil, plastic and cardboard sections

Buy Local, Gift Happy

Buy Local Gift Happy

The Council's Buy Local, Gift Happy campaign is back this Christmas. As well as a great way to support the local economy and our business owners, shopping with local retailers can lead to lower-waste gifting:

  • Looking to buy less stuff? Buy experiences from local cafes, spas and attractions instead
  • Buying gifts in person reduces wasted packaging
  • Buying from a local retailer can reduce carbon emissions from delivery costs and travel miles

Choosing local food and drink options as gifts cuts down on food miles and means there'll be no waste: as long as you make the right choices, of course!
