Take part in the world's largest bird survey

Big Garden Birdwatch

This weekend (28 – 30 January) sees the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Taking part is easy, simply count the birds you see in your garden, from your balcony or in your local park for one hour over the weekend. Then go online and tell the RSPB what you saw.

Over 1 million people took place last year and they are hoping to encourage even more participants this year. .

Coinciding with the Big Garden Birdwatch the Friends of Horsham Park, supported by our Countryside Wardens, are hosting a free bird-spotting event on Sunday 30 January.

There will be fun activities running throughout the morning from 10.00am – 12.00pm, all designed to help children learn more about the birds that call the Park home.

HGG continue to do sterling work – this time in Southwater

HGG SCP

Our volunteers continue to do an amazing job helping us maintain our parks and open spaces and this month Horsham Green Gym have been busy working on improvements in both Southwater Country Park and in the Village.

Working closely alongside Ryan, our Volunteer Support Countryside Warden, in the country park the team helped with path clearing, surface improvements in Dinosaur Island and opening up the scrub and grassland, to improve the habitat for Nightingales.

This vital work will help these birds, who are now on the national red list for conservation concern due to severe population decline and loss of suitable breeding sites.

While in the village, the team were working hard at The Ghyll to clear the footpaths and improve access in and around the area.

This is just part of their on-going schedule undertaking practical conservation tasks across the District.

Their next talk entitled 'Western Cape Wanderings' will feature the wildflowers and smaller less well known animals of South Africa.

Taking place on Thursday 17th February, this zoom call is open to all to enjoy. Coming soon, will also be details on their activities for the February half term, so please keep checking the page for more detail.
