Our scheme would ease congestion and improve safety around junction 9 on the M3
The Government’s independent planning authority, the Planning Inspectorate, has accepted our Development Consent Order application for examination, meaning that plans to improve junction 9 on the M3 can now move forward to the next stage.

What happens next?
The decision means we’ve submitted all the information needed for our application to move into the examination stage. The Planning Inspectorate will have around three months to prepare for this. Should consent be granted, construction could start as early as 2024/25.

In the early part of next year, we’ll be carrying out some engineering and ecology surveys.
Our ecology surveys will monitor habitats to identify local flora, fauna and any protected species so we can work in the area without disturbing any wildlife.
We’ll also be doing some drainage, ground investigation and utility surveys to assist with the design of the project. Some traffic management and overnight closures may be required but we’ll give plenty of notice on our website and social media channels so you can plan ahead.
Driving in the cold weather can be dangerous. Our website has plenty of advice on driving safely in winter. For guidance on what to do before you travel and when you’re on the road, visit our website.

Work on the nearby junction 9 to 14 concrete barrier replacement scheme will pause temporarily over the Christmas break. In the New Year, the team will start to put in most of the new concrete barriers.

On behalf of the M3 junction 9 team, we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2023!
