Next week marks a significant milestone for our scheme.
By Tuesday 21 June, we will have completed half of the new pathway between Firle and Polegate. We’re also expecting it to be fully open for use by the end of 2022, which is significantly earlier than planned!
Did you know...?
Signs on the new crossing at Firle
- The new path is around 13km or nearly 9 miles long – that’s the length of 260 Olympic swimming pools.
- We’ve created three new ponds to reduce the risk of serious flooding and provide new habitats for wildlife.
- For everyone's safety, 130 new signs have been installed – 37 signposts, 38 road signs and 55 bollards.
- Our new path crosses 14 side roads.
And that's not all...
Section of path created behind an existing hedgerow
- 3,025 new trees will be planted along the route. Over two thirds of these will be in new broadleaf woodlands, creating habitats for species such as beetles and bats.
- The remaining 695 trees will be planted in wet woodlands creating habitats for frogs, toads and rarer birds such as siskins.
- 32,000 plants will be added along the route to create new hedgerows, providing habitat for local dormice and other protected species.
Our progress to date
This image shows our progress on the new shared pathway to date.
The new path will provide better access and improved safety for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders within the local communities of Firle, Selmeston, Alciston, Wilmington, Folkington and Polegate.
We’re working to finish as soon as we can, however the path must remain closed for now to keep all road users and our team safe. We’ll let you know as soon as we’re ready to open!
