Welcome to our next M25 junction 25 improvement scheme newsletter, thank you for your interest in our project.
Construction progress
The major construction of the junction is now in full swing on all parts of the junction, and preparation for the foundations of the separate lane leading to the A10 northbound is well under way.
What we’ve done so far
On the southern side of the junction, we built a temporary platform for a large crane. This crane was used to lift heavy concrete blocks into position to form a new retaining wall near the subway entrance. The wall supports the new path that will offer pedestrians and cyclists a safe, improved route through the junction at the new crossing point.
Thames Water have completed the diversion of a large water main away from the area we’ll be using for the new A10 northbound slip road. This ensures the water main is easily accessible for future maintenance or repairs. We’ve now started to install the drainage for the new carriageway in this area.
At the end of April, we had a weekend closure in place to install new parapets on the mainline carriageway of the M25 around the junction. Parapets act as a safety barrier and are often installed at the edge of bridges, motorways or retaining walls to provide protection for vehicles and pedestrians from the vertical drop.
We’ve also started to install ducting and drainage on the area next to the M25 clockwise and anticlockwise off-slips. This will continue over the coming months.
As traffic levels are steadily increasing back to pre-pandemic levels, more vehicles are using the junction. We’re looking at how we can keep traffic moving for the next phase of traffic management, while ensuring we keep everyone safe.
While most of our work on the project has taken place off the network, we’re working closely with our maintenance contractor and local highways authorities to find the best way to minimise disruption to road users. Whenever possible, we’re sharing lane and road closures, meaning we can complete the work without the need for further closures.
Other work is also taking place on the local highway authority network. More information, including dates and times, can be found on One.Network.
What’s happening over the next couple of months
In the coming months, the foundations of the new dedicated A10 northbound slip-road from the M25 clockwise will begin to take shape as we finish the earthworks, drainage and ducting.
The east bridge on the junction will be closed in late July for a full weekend to allow us waterproof and widen the road. These works will be carried out under one closure to help minimise disturbance to locals and road users.
More information about the closure will be available on our website.
At the end of July, you will see new traffic management on the junction for the next phase of works. To allow us to start preparing to widen the approaching A10 southbound carriageway, we had planned to close a lane. After working with the local highways authority and reviewing the traffic management, we’ll now be completing this work with narrow lanes in place. This means all lanes can remain open, minimising disruption to your journey. This work has been timed for the summer, when traffic levels are lower.
Also, in late July, we’ll start preparation works for the construction of the new pedestrian crossing on the anticlockwise exit slip. A temporary pedestrian crossing will be in place as work progresses.
Details on all of the upcoming closures and diversions will available through the project website, social media and onsite signage.
In the community
As part of the Great British Spring Clean our team headed down to the bypass that runs under the junction that is notorious for litter, to give it a good tidy up. We found nearly 200 plastic bags, over 100 drink cans and nearly as many plastic bottles. In amongst the rubbish collected, we found a singular trainer and an old crisp packet with a best before date from 1997!
Our delivery partners are also hosting a virtual work experience for any students in year 10 or above, interested in the construction and engineering. The sessions will take place from Monday 19 July until Friday 23 July. Visit the event webpage to find out more or register for the sessions.
