After a carbon footprint study by "One Carbon World", we were advised to prioritise decarbonization particularly tackling the gas usage in the Council's buildings, a significant amount of progress has been made.Â
Â
At Hyndburn Leisure Centre, we have:
 ✔ Reduced CO2 emissions by 71%Â
✔ Installed Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) technologyÂ
✔ Renewable electricity generation onsiteÂ
✔ Improved efficiency ventilation systems and air handling unitsÂ
✔ Building Energy Monitoring systemsÂ
✔ Reduced fossil fuels to zero
Â
At one of our buildings, Scaitcliffe House, we have:
✔ Reduced CO2 emissions by 67%Â
✔ ASHP technology to replace inefficient storage heatersÂ
✔ Increased onsite renewable electricity generation with solar panelsÂ
✔ Installed LED lightingÂ
Â
At Cemeteries in Accrington, we have:
✔ Reduced CO2 emissions by 10%
✔ Improved efficiency control of the cremators
Â
Overall achievements so far:
✔ 450 tonnes of CO2 saved per year
✔ Annual savings of more than £120,000
✔ £2.3 million external investmentÂ
✔ 100 Jobs employed on the works
In 2019, we pledged to plant a tree for every household in Hyndburn & work has been ongoing to achieve this goal.
This year, 4,000 trees were planted in Hyndburn on 16 sites and at 10 schools – including creation of microwoodlands, tree avenues, oak guilds, fruit trees, blossom and berries.
Tree planting has been community led - with thanks to local volunteers, families, schools, cadets supported by PROSPECTS Foundation and Woody (Hyndburn) CIC.
To help the natural world recover and expand, natural regeneration trials have taken place on two sites in Hyndburn.
Natural regeneration is the process of replenishing woodlands with trees that grow from seeds that fall.
One example of future plans is Bury Meadows, a new Country Park in Oswaldtwistle, you can read more about this via the link below.Â
