Stokes Bay seawall repair finished in time for the winter
The major project to repair a damaged stretch of seawall at Stokes Bay has been completed, in time to protect the area for winter.
The £1.2m project was completed in 17 weeks, on time and on budget. On Thursday 26 September Alverbank East Car Park and the promenade reopened after being closed off for several years.
Gosport Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have worked together to replace the 135m section of seawall damaged by several storms. Together the councils successfully gained £759,317 of Local Levy funding. Gosport contributed an additional £450,000 and Hampshire £50,000.
The Rum Store in Victoria Quay used to house the entire Royal Navy store of rum rations - but over the years fell into disrepair.
A Council-led bid for Government funding means that plans are afoot to begin restoring the building and bringing it back into use as employment space, retail and leisure - including a possible rooftop terrace bar and restaurant with views across Portsmouth Harbour.
Last chance to have your say on new public waterfront art trail
The Gosport Lines exhibition explores different ways that culture and creativity can help tell Gosport's history, and link up existing heritage sites throughout the town. 15 possible locations are identified for interventions like public art, interactive play areas, gathering spaces, or heritage monuments - and we want your feedback.
The exhibition and consultation on the ideas run until 19 October 2024 on the second-floor mezzanine at the Gosport Discovery Centre, High St, Gosport, PO12 1BT - and are also available online on the council website:
Plans to transform the historic former cinema the Criterion in Gosport have taken a big step forward.
Approval has been given for independent consultants Counterculture to develop a full business case for how it could be turned into a multi-purpose live entertainment venue.
The Criterion, in Forton Road, opened in 1912 and was run as a cinema and theatre until 1968. It then became a bingo hall, which closed in 2020. In 2022 the council bought it, with a plan to restore the building and re-open it as a multi-use entertainment venue for the community.
It's been another amazing summer of events in Gosport entertaining thousands of people.
From Party in the Park at the end of July, to a jam-packed August featuring Summer in Lee, Gosport Waterfront Festival and Gosport Sunset Festival.
September had FortonFest 24 and ParkFest 24, and not to mention the free high street events the council put on for families on four Saturdays during the summer holiday, pictured above.
Thanks to everyone who helped organise the incredible events, and everyone who came along and enjoyed them!
