GM PEER SUPPORT NEWS

Broadening the GM Peer Support Network

We’re excited to share some significant updates to the Greater Manchester Peer Support Network.

Currently focused on Personalised Care roles (Social Prescribing Link Workers, Care Coordinators, and Health and Wellbeing Coaches), the network is expanding to include the wider frontline workforce. This will enrich discussions by bringing diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration within neighbourhoods, and strengthening connections across health and social care.

Aligned with GM's Live Well mission, we’re inviting workforces with experience in providing holistic, person-centered support to co-design a broader, more integrated network.

What does this mean? You’ll have opportunities to:

  • Learn more about the changes and help shape this proof-of-concept phase.
  • Influence how a sustainable Frontline Workforce Network could support collaboration and joint learning across Greater Manchester.

How can you get involved? Join one of our virtual co-design sessions in January to share your insights:

NEWS FROM ACROSS GM

How a movement for movement in Greater Manchester is delivering more active lives

ppl on bikes

National and local leaders recently visited the largest bike library in Greater Manchester (GM) as part of a refreshed commitment to tackle health inequalities through movement. Leigh Bike Library has loaned out more than 200 bikes since its launch in April 2023 with 45% of bikes being purchased by users at the end of their loan period.

Prior to the pandemic inactivity was very low across GM and falling faster than the national rate. Since then independent research found that devolution was leading to broad improvements in health outcomes. Improvements have also been made thanks to the GM Moving in Action strategy with clear signs recovery is heading towards the national average and inactivity rates stabilising.

Earlier this year NHS GM committed to the delivery of the strategy by extending their partnership with GM Moving with a £2 million investment over the next three years. The impact of GM Moving is giving local leaders increasing confidence in the region’s approach to delivering better health through designing movement and physical activity back into life.

Live Well event brings together public services and communities to grow community power

live well

In November, nearly 500 people from across Greater Manchester came together to talk about growing community power and decision making at the third event in the Live Well movement building series.

The event harnessed the strength and creativity of the GM Live Well movement as public services move towards a powerful ambition to further transform neighbourhood working towards prevention.

With 12 breakout sessions, panel debates, lightning talks, a choir, youth band, walking tours, legislative theatre, a power map and community reporting, even the living room themed furniture was community-powered (thanks to Mustard Tree).

Elephants Trail's team of community reporters defined community power as ‘finding ways to make things happen’. They saw people coming together and shifting things for the better and created a film called ‘Able. Greater Manchester leaders highlighted their collective call for the devolution of power out of Westminster, across our systems and into the hands of neighbourhoods and communities.

Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions said: “You’re pioneering in Greater Manchester. We want to learn and unleash the huge potential.”

A five minute video summary of the event is available on YouTube.

Be Well and Natural England collaboration

Natural England

Be Well is leading on a research piece on Natural England's behalf, looking in to barriers which young people (aged 13-25) face in accessing high quality green spaces in Hulme, Moss Side and Longsight.

The project will be running until June 2025 with the potential to be repeated in other areas of England. Data will be collected from various sources such as clients, youth centres, schools and other green projects to find out why young people may not use green spaces, and whether we can help boost green space usage.

The aim is to start putting on taster sessions by Spring 2025 for young participants with the help of Sow the City, and aim to produce a research document by June 2025.

Please reach out to genna.spiteri@thebiglifegroup.com if you have a group of young people that would like to share their voice and get involved.

Have your say on a new Greater Manchester Plan for Nature

NATIONAL NEWS

New report shows impact of social prescribing on health service use and costs

SP cartoon

NASP has reported that The Impact of Social Prescribing on Health Service Use and Costs: Examples of local evaluations in practice suggests that there is strong and growing evidence that social prescribing services can lead to substantial reductions in avoidable GP appointments, hospital admissions and A&E attendances.

Looking at data from nine areas of England, its findings include:

  • 42.2% reduction in GP appointments among 1,751 patients who accessed social prescribing in Tameside and Glossop.
  • 15.4%–23.6% reduction in A&E attendances among 5,908 patients who accessed social prescribing in Kent.
  • In Kirklees and Rotherham, frequent users of healthcare services saw GP visits and A&E attendances reduce substantially following social prescribing interventions.

The report also suggested that social prescribing can have a positive economic impact. NASP is recommending that social prescribing continues to be expanded so it is available to patients across a wider range of NHS care and treatment services.

Winter Vaccinations

Work to support the uptake of winter vaccinations across England continues. GM now has a suite of vaccination videos in community languages fronted by trusted leaders in communities.

Social Prescribing, Health Inequalities and Racialised Communities

race equality

The Race Equality Foundation, supported by the VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance, has released a new report, Social Prescribing, Health Inequalities and Racial Communities, calling for more consistent and rigorous ethnicity data collection in social prescribing.

The report highlights the promise of social prescribing in improving mental health, reducing emergency visits, and tackling barriers to healthcare engagement, particularly by addressing the social determinants of health. However, it underscores a significant gap in understanding its impact on racialised communities due to inconsistent data collection and analysis.

Older people have something to say – ensuring voices are heard

The ‘Ageing in Place’ research project explores how cities can meet the needs of a diverse range of older people to become more age-friendly.

As part of the ‘Ageing in Place’ project, a short film was produced with older people in cities across seven different countries, speaking about what ‘age-friendly’ meant to them. The older people in the film are residents of their cities, volunteers at community centres, members of older people boards and participants in age-friendly services. Their views and opinions represent a diversity of experience and involvement in age-friendly cities and communities.

The Alzheimer's Society: Because we’re human too: why dementia training for care workers matters

The Alzheimer's Society report demonstrates the significant benefits of dementia training to people living with dementia, care staff, care providers and the wider health and care system – showing that it can considerably improve people’s quality of life, increase staff job satisfaction and lead to savings in the wider health and care system. It shows that high quality training could be delivered nationally at relatively low cost.
