Celebrating Social Prescribing Week

Social Prescribing Day logo

This week sees the annual celebration of local community groups and activities that keep us happy and healthy, and the teams connecting people into them.

#SocialPrescribingDay is on 10 March and the Social Prescribing Network has produced a suite of resources to help promote the day.

Greater Manchester is celebrating the week at the International Social Prescribing Conference where the team will give presentations on Nature for Health, our green programme, and our children and young people's work. We will be sharing a blog from GM's first youth Link Worker and announcing funding for a schools social prescribing pilot. Both stories will be available to read via our Twitter @GMPandC. Please do tag us in anything you are doing and we will share your great work.

NHSE captures regional examples of social prescribing on film

Person doing craft

The Personalised Care team at NHSE filmed people involved in social prescribing in Salford, Stockport and Rochdale for #SocialPrescribingWeek

Salford representatives talked about how social prescribing supports people locally and personally, in a way they want and need to achieve life goals. Connecting into 800 VCSE organisations across the city highlights how partnership working with the voluntary sector is crucial.

Stockport spoke about GP practices as community anchors, and with most determinants of health nothing to do with medicine, the vital role of Link Workers in keeping people happy and healthy.

Rochdale's filming highlighted Lock50, with the Canal and River Trust, which offers something different to patients, using green and blue space to improve mental health, seeing a huge difference in people's lives and transforming the canal into a safer, nicer place to be.

You can watch the film here.

People walking

TfGM has been awarded funding for a feasibility study into a pilot for active travel social prescribing. We're looking forward to exploring how we can work with local communities to support more people to incorporate walking and cycling into healthy happy lives. Read more on BBC Online here.

Lift someone out of lonliness

22 March: Addiction and Social Prescribing

Register here for National Academy for Social Prescribing webinar at 3-4pm on Eventbrite

Addiction is an issue affecting people and their families in communities across the country. Government figures for England show that between April 2020 and March 2021 there were 275,000 adults and 11,000 young people in contact with drug and alcohol services, whilst there are estimated to be 600,000 adults with alcohol dependency and 300,000 users of opiates and crack cocaine.

It is not only a common, but a complex problem. With 17% of adults entering treatment saying they had housing problems, and 63% saying they needed help with their mental health, these figures suggest that those suffering from addiction need interventions which will do more than simply help with their addiction.

Social prescribing is well placed to help people in need of this kind of support. In this webinar we will explore how social prescribing can connect people with community groups and advice to help them with all aspects of their recovery.
