The problem with pumpkins
Sustainability charity Hubbub estimate that a scary 22 million pumpkins go to waste each year.
The process of growing, making, distributing, storing and cooking our food uses loads of energy, fuel and water and this process generates 30% of the world’s CO₂e greenhouse gas levels. Let’s change this and do something good for our planet and our pockets by creating some delicious food with our pumpkins and include it as part of our annual Halloween celebrations.
Pumpkins are really tasty, and every part of them is edible except for the stalk. Check out these six ways to eat your pumpkin this Halloween. 🎃
What's in season?
Growing your own fruit and vegetables or even just buying seasonal food is a great way to help the environment. It reduces food miles and the need for plastic packaging, both of which contribute to climate change.
What's in season? Pumpkins, chestnuts, rosemary, elderberries, apples, beetroot, potatoes, parsnips and figs
Libraries costume swaps 👻
Gloucestershire Libraries are running a Halloween costume swap between 9 October and 1 November to help reduce waste and support the cost of living. They are also calling out for costume donations across Gloucestershire, just head to your local library.
Swap last year’s Halloween costume for a new one. Don’t have one from last year? You can still take part and take one home. Costume swaps are happening across all county libraries. 🤗
Donations will be accepted throughout the swap. Accessories, whole and part costumes accepted. Both adult and child costumes are welcome.
We encourage anyone who can help to get touch with your local library.
It's international walk to school month
Walking to school offers many benefits. Switching the journey to school from the motor car to walking will reduce levels of air pollution as well as improving physical and mental health.
Living Streets have put together 14 sets of colourful and educational walking activities to support children in learning about important themes while staying active. You can download the activity booklet here.
