Fireworks and trauma support
The Homes for Ukraine team have received some feedback from a person living with trauma and we would like to bring this to your attention. Some Ukrainian guests and their children may become worried when fireworks are set off. Bonfire night (5 Nov) is on a weekend this year, so we anticipate people around you may set off fireworks in their gardens as well as noise from local public fireworks displays.
Please reassure your guests that fireworks are normal for this time of year, and share these links to support:
- If you or someone you know needs help in a mental health crisis, you can contact the Gloucestershire Mental Health Crisis Teams or call 0800 169 0398. The Mental Health Crisis Team will support individuals aged 11 and over. Visit the NHS website for more information.
- For information on mental health services available in Gloucestershire and to check whether you are eligible to refer yourself to the service, go to BeWell Glos or, for children and young adults, go to On Your Mind.
For hosts, we have shared some of the slides from Dr Richard Castle’s Trauma presentation which may be useful.
We are pleased to invite you to another online questions and answer session for hosts, with a specific focus on housing. This was a popular subject for discussion in our previous sessions so we hope this will be useful. Please use the sign-up link below - we look forward to seeing you.
Best wishes

Sponsor webinar – Housing Q&A session
If you currently sponsor a Ukrainian guest, you are invited to join an online question and answer session. The session will be focused on housing and accommodation, but other questions are welcomed.
Date Tuesday 8 November
Time 6pm – 7pm; lasting 1 hour
Location – online; Microsoft Teams
This session will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions to representatives from district council housing teams, GARAS (Gloucestershire Association for Refugees and Asylum Seekers) and the Homes for Ukraine Team.
Please send us your questions in advance by 7 November so we can have answers ready for you. There will be an opportunity to ask some questions on the day, and if we run out of time you can send us questions after the event too.
How to attend
Attendees must book their spaces on this session. You will be sent a link to the teams call.
If you can’t attend but still have questions, please email hfuteam@gloucestershire.gov.uk
There will be a feedback form after the session for your suggestions on how we can make sure these sessions are as useful as possible. The Homes for Ukraine team are grateful for your ongoing commitment to support Ukraine guests, and if there are any topics you would like to hear more about, please let us know on your feedback form.
Housing options – what happens next?
Understandably, we have received a few questions related to housing arrangements and the support on offer through various organisations. We have developed an information pack which covers the options available for what can happen after the initial six months of sponsorship. Staying in the HFU scheme is the preferred option, and both guests and hosts will be supported with this. You can read more online here.
