Scheme update and virtual event invite

23 February 2021

You are invited to meet the contractor

We will be holding a virtual 'meet the contractor' event on 25 February at 3pm

The team will talk through a scheme update, progress photos on the Arle Court roundabout and surrounding area, as well as introduce the contractor for the second part of the scheme - Alun Griffiths plc.

Alun Griffiths will be delivering the Benhall Roundabout and Telstar Way section of the scheme.

We hope you can join us on the Gloucestershire County Council YouTube channel for the live stream. If you can't make it a recording of the session will be available on the scheme web page.

Scheme update

The scheme is progressing on target for completing the Arle Court section of improvements in summer 2021.

Construction of the retaining walls on the subway is moving forward on the north east side, and we aim to have the subway back open in summer 2021, if not sooner. We really appreciate your patience while we complete the subway work.

Work is complete on the Arle Court roundabout itself, and we are aiming to do the final resurfacing and traffic signals later in the spring.

The A40 eastbound arm is nearly complete too, and is also waiting to final resurfacing, along with new signs and lighting.

The A40 westbound road widening is over halfway there, with electric and internet diversions complete. The Park and Ride slip road is progressing well and from the air the site here has changed alot.

Electricity and water main diversions have finished at Hatherley Lane. Kerb line changes at the KFC corner are underway in preparation for reconstructing the road and laying a new footway here.

The East Splitter Island  is really taking shape; a temporary surface to the new lane extension has been laid and new kerbs are nearly complete here.

Work has progressed well on the B4063 arm of the roundabout. Service diversions (like electricity and water) are now complete. Drainage works have been completed so surface water will not cause problems for road users, cyclists or pedestrians in future. The road has started to be reconstructed here, which will eventually link up with the new Gloucester to Cheltenham cycleway.

Up-coming work

  • Construction of North West and South side retaining walls for the subway
  • Arle Court roundabout final resurfacing in March/April - night closures tbc
  • Installing traffic signals and sign bases at Arle Court roundabout
  • New footway at Hatherley Lane, with streetlights to be installed. The road will be widened on the south bound section too.
  • Works will continue on B4063 arm to reconstruct the road and realign kerbs
  • Lots of work to come on A40 westbound including kerb laying, drainage, surfacing and new signs and street lights.
  • Road closure on A40 westbound over night on 25 and 26 February (see below)

Have your say on new Gloucester to Cheltenham cycleway designs

Earlier this month, we unveiled new designs for an ambitious cycleway between Gloucester and Cheltenham along the B4063 and you are invited to give feedback.

We are sharing this with you because the route will eventually link up Gloucester with the cycling and walking improvements currently under construction at Arle Court and Benhall roundabouts, giving residents and employees in Churchdown and Staverton direct access to Cheltenham Rail Station.

We have launched a survey so you can give feedback on new plans for this section and your thoughts will be used to help to shape the final design.

The survey is available online until 10 March 2021 and can be found online at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/B4063

Please share this information with your family, friends, neighbours and employees who may live near to the scheme. We want to hear from as many different people as possible.

About the scheme

This new cycleway will be accessible to all, in line with the latest Government guidance, and improve health and wellbeing in the community while reducing Gloucestershire’s carbon emissions.

The scheme is key to unlocking green transport for those commuting between the two urban areas and will provide a safe continuous route for the thousands of cyclists in Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham.

The scheme will be split into two parts, with work on the section between Elmbridge Court roundabout and Arle Court roundabout starting first in summer 2021.

The B4063 route was originally a Highways England project aimed to address safety concerns raised by cyclists travelling on the busy A40. This route provides a central ‘spine’ cycle network which can then branch out into smaller communities, connecting many workplaces with transport hubs and hospitals as rebooting the daily commute is the long-term goal.

If you have any questions or need help filling out the survey please email us majorprojects@gloucestershire.gov.uk and the team will be able to help you.
