Milton Road - Bus, Cycling and Walking Improvements Project
Update No. 2 – September 2022
Completion of September Road Closures
Thank you for your patience while the road was closed overnight between the 5th-9th September. We were able to finish all the scheduled works and the road is now set up so that Milestone can start work on the main works. This included closing the bus lane along the whole of Milton Road, putting in traffic cones, and introducing the 20-mph speed limit. In addition, Woodhead Drive is now closed to all motor traffic. Vehicles wishing to join Milton Road will be diverted via Downham’s Lane.
Ongoing Works
The focus of the works is now on the east side of Milton Road, and you will see multiple teams from Milestone starting to work along the length of the road. We have also installed a temporary crossing at the Hungry Horse to allow pedestrians to cross. Please do not cycle or walk within the coned off closure and follow signage for the appropriate diversion.
We have produced two maps showing the diversion routes for walking and cycling now we have reached this first phase of the main works. Please click on the links below to view them.

Changes to Bus Stops
Both the inbound and outbound bus stops at Mitcham’s Corner end (Westbrook Centre, stops 0500CCity387/390) by the junction of Westbrook Drive have been reinstated following their closure last month.owever, three bus stops have been temporary suspended. They are: -
- Westbrook Centre inbound: Temporary replacement is 100m away, before the Gilbert Road junction
- Shops (Co-op) inbound: Temporary replacement is before the Highworth Avenue roundabout
- Milton Arms inbound: Temporary replacement is 120m away
When there are temporary suspensions to bus stops, the temporary/alternative stops will be displayed via signage at the relevant bus stops along Milton Road during the project. Milton Road Map
To quickly and easily understand how the scheme will look once completed, this map (Milton Road Scheme Map) has been created, based off the technical design drawings (available on our website). Please note that this map is not to scale and will not show much of the detail that is shown on the technical drawings. The map is intended to be used as a general guide to how the overall scheme will look when complete.
Hard Copy of Plans
Hard copies of the technical plans for the Milton Road project have been placed in the Milton Road Library on Ascham Road. This will allow members of the public to view the plans as an alternative to accessing them online (plans available on our website) should they prefer. Copies will also be placed in both Cambridge Central Library and Arbury Library. Please note these plans are to remain at their respective location and are not intended for individuals to take away with them.
